Endless Realms bestiary - Prismatic Dragon
Corebook artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Differing from other dragon concepts in the game so far, this dragon isn't a demigod or avatar of a particular elemental or cosmic force, and this one is actually not a gemstone dragon, either! The prismatic dragon is a crystalline being capable of transferring and sealing energy and entities via crystals - I thought it would prove particularly challenging, but actually cooperated pretty well, heh ;P

Yes the mages worst enemy. When someone uses magic it collects the energy from the spell and uses the crystals from it spear its enemies. But I have the very unhealthy urge to just walk up and poke this dragon xD I have no idea why either. Now with the power that it has captured how strong of a blast can it produce. Since normal weapons will have issues with this because crystals are some of the hardest substances.
Heh, I'm very glad you like him! Or are generally inspired, anyway. I just always feel a bit bad because I can't tell you about how the creature will actually be implemented! But yes, I think those are all very plausible strategies I could see it using, although I might be concerned about when the dragon is defeated - one of the only things I know is that when one of the prismatic dragon's crystal are broken, anything sealed inside escapes, so I could see it exploding rather dangerously o_o
I'm almost envisioning a Diablo-esque accident :b Where, oh good, dangerous entities have been sealed away by this dragon, but the shard couldn't contain the entity anymore or got launched out in an explosion, and now the shard's embedded in someone's body now and the powerful entity is trying to take over the player's body :V

No, since the art director didn't want it to be one of the gemstone dragons (despite being made of crystal) and so it's its own stand-alone type. I didn't have to come up with any symbolic characteristics for this one because the art director already had a concept for it (rainbowy dragon made of crystals that seals stuff in said crystals), while the other ones were made up entirely by me.
Yes, there is a dragon for every element, although we are probably going to redo the Earth dragon (I was originally told it was "something that used to be a dragon but no longer is" so it doesn't quite feel right), and I'm not happy with the job I did on the Ice one, since it was my first and we hadn't quite decided on art direction for dragons yet.

No, not the way the art director described it to me. For the gemstone dragons, she gave me a list of stones and said, "I don't have any concepts for these, just make them up - they can be totally gemstone or just parts, it's just a chance to make them extra pretty!" So I said I was going to base them off of historical/pagan lore, the whole magical stone properties stuff and all that.
However, with the prismatic dragon, she had a different concept already for it - she wanted a crystalline dragon with a bit of a rainbow effect, and its "thing" is sealing energies/entities within crystals. I know being crystalline makes it seem like it should be a gemstone dragon, but since it's not a particular type of stone/mineral/gem, it's not, it's just its own thing, sort of like the psionic dragon.
