348 – Die Abendmutter

Die Abendmutter (the evening mother) is always on the prowl for children who dawdle outside past dark. She appears as a wizened old woman with long grasping fingers, but it wasn’t always so. Once she was a beautiful young mother accused of witchcraft after an outbreak of hoof and mouth disease killed her village’s cattle; she and her children were burned at the stake. Since then, her spirit takes revenge by stealing others’ children whenever she can.
