A solid first try, though I have a couple critiques. First, the paragraph containing the transformation could probably have been broken down into two or three paragraph to help with the flow of the transformation. Second, although I do realize the character was changing, it's helpful to show and not tell a character's reactions to something. For example, in the story you often say the character felt sad or happy, when it might be better to show a physical reaction, like a squeal of delight or a sigh of dismay. Overall, it is a sweet story and I hope my comments provide help for future endeavors!
