Well for one, I press down way too hard. Also I constantly erase and mistakes with my hands shaking constantly, not to mention that colored pencils are almost impossible to erase.. Plus I'm horrible at picking skin color for humans, it always looks muddy and just plane wrong. ;w; Try to draw a light tan skin, I get orange mud DX So I toss them and never post them.. Well, except for one failure I submitted '3'
I'd try training to press lighter, just sort of scribble on paper until you find a pressure that works well and doesn't destroy the paper. Then keep practicing with that pressure. Another option is thicker paper.
As for the colours I'd recommend a tester first, try it on a scrap paper or in the corner of the paper you're using and make sure you like it before you put it on them. When I draw in my sketchbook I use the bits of paper in between the rings to test colours.
