Something I made during my downtime. This was definitely one of the more fun things I've drawn in a while, and the whole time all I could think is how much fun it must have been to animate this guy. That and how I kind of want a prequel movie about kai and oogway going on adventures and stuff.

I REALLY like this but I feel like the depth could be pushed and give it a real punch if you played with both blur on the things whipping around (hair, chain that's in the midground, etc) and unsaturated some of the colours of both the legs, right arm, and the blade in the back.
Idk just an idea. Could go around with the lasso tool and get an idea of the effect I think before committing to a bigger change, but otherwise it's super rad.

Oh hey, you're not dead. Thanks for the feedback, I definitely see what you're saying. If I ever end up using this for something else I'll probably try and work those points in. For now though I'm going to move on to other stuff, and keep those points in mind for the future. Either way, I'm glad to hear it's rad.
I figured, and I'm sure you've survived worse. I saw your journal and was going to comment, but it seemed like you were already getting a lot of very different advice so figured I wouldn't be another voice in the crowd. Either way, I hope you're feeling better.
Thanks. I'm feeling a little better since I posted, but I'm still going to the doctor, because there are like multiple problems going at once. I should be okay. I'm hoping it all turns out to be benign things like a persistent virus/bacteria infection or something. A mystery~~~
Hey there, thanks for the compliments on my drawing, I'm glad you like it :)
To answer your question, I wouldn't have made this drawing if I didn't like the movie. I really enjoy these movies as well, and I thought that the third one was a solid entry into the franchise. Plus it's got an 86% on rottentomatoes so I'd say it's a safe bet you'll probably like it. It's got a lot of good humour, the characters are all fun, and the action/visuals are really impressive. Kai's a fun villain with a really cool fighting style which makes the fight scenes really unique and entertaining.
I will say though that as much as I did enjoy it, it was probably my least favourite of the three. Not by any substantial amount though, I still feel that it managed to do what the series does well. It holds it's own against the other two, and I liked what it added to the story in terms of character and world building. I could go more in depth but I'd just start rambling.

Agreed. Though I may be bias because when I tried to see the movie, there was a crying baby throughout distracting me, the sound quality was low, and two kids decided to harass me toward the end of the film, distracting me further (Don't go to Manhattan theatres. lesson learned). I tried to see the film again, and they cut off 1/3rd of the film by a broken projector and refused to fix it, so I wasn't paying full price for 1/3rd of a film, lol.
But the problem I seen is that Kai wasn't as motivated a villain. Tai Lung had a great motivation. He felt slighted after working his whole life for a goal. Shen was banished by his parents, felt he didn't deserve it, and thus tried to complete his original goal of preventing the "black and white warrior". He was also slightly off kilter from the get-go (symbolized by being a bird and the colour white associated with death, as well as his vanity as a peacock). Kai wanted...chi...because...he'd be da strongest. Which doesn't make too much sense when they kinda rushed the concept of there being this whole heavenly/celestial world. I'm fine with introducing this celestial world into the universe, but it was hard to swallow that and then think it somehow mattered that Kai was stealing all these great master's chi. I dunno. Maybe I need a more solid viewing of the film at all. I did like a lot of it, just didn't think he was as strong a villain, and Kung Fu Panda's villains sorta make the movies.

***Ok, for anyone else reading this comment thread I'm going to be verging into spoilers a bit here***
Yeah, it sounds like you and I had a similar first viewing experience. I kind of wish I had gone on a day when I was less tired from running errands, as between that and some other stuff that was going on I wasn't in the best of moods.
I definitely see what you're saying. When I say that I though Kai was a fun villain I say that more in the sense that he was an entertaining character, as opposed to how he was written. I honestly don't think he was badly written, but compared to the other two his motivations were definitely a lot simpler. For me though, I'm fine with a villain having simple motivations, and in all fairness I do think there were some layers to it beyond just being greedy and power hungry. Like Tai Lung and Shen there was a sense of entitlement to him and a feeling of being robbed of his legacy by someone he cared for, so there were themes of betrayal and insecurity going on there which I appreciated. And what he lacked in motivation I felt he made up for with fun dialogue and really unique action set pieces. Plus J.k Simmons did a really good job voicing him. He was intimidating but at the same time had more of a sense of humour then the aforementioned villains, which was a nice addition. All in all I don't think he was badly written, just not particularly as strong as the others.
I think you might enjoy it more if you watch it a second time, I know I definitely did. I had the chance to see it in theatres again, and definitely not on my computer where I would be violating distribution laws. I think my issue with it the first time was that there were some plot elements I enjoyed more in hindsight then I did in the actual moment. I remember the first time I was a little confused as to where certain things were going, like how exactly Po was learning Chi and what not, but once it's revealed that his dad was lying to him, I kind of appreciated those scenes a bit more (upon rewatching it there's some nice subtle animation on Li whenever he lies to Po but it hasn't been revealed yet, like, you can see him get a little shifty in the eyes). It also seemed kind of a coincidence that Li showed up at a dramatically convenient moment, but again once it's revealed that it was oogway's meddling I was cool with it. It also may have just been that I was being too analytical the first time and was more laid back the second viewing, I find I've been doing that a lot lately with movies. I did it with How to train Your Dragon and Zootopia, which I both really enjoyed when it's all said and done. Hell upon watching this a second time there were quite a few jokes I missed that got a genuine laugh out of me.
And as a random side note, this movie didn't do a lot of the things I was worried it would do, like introduce unnecessary love interest characters or stuff like that.
Wow, I rambled on longer than I thought I would. Anwyay, this has been another edition of Alex overanalyses a movie aimed at children.

See, maybe I missed the layers because I was too busy wishing the parents would be dragged out by CPS. >_> And nah I wouldn't say "badly written", just "weaker" than the last two. I loved Oogway in it, and almost wish there was more of him and more on panda lore/their powers.
Ah, yes. A theater. yes, yes. I see. But oh, see, I didn't connect pieces at all that it was Oogway meddling. I think I was clocked out entirely because of the noise in my theater, so I'll definitely need to re-watch. Maybe I can still find it in theatres if I'm lucky. I seen Zootopia twice in theatres and do the opposite of what you do. First viewing is my laid back viewing, and second is my more analytical viewing, heh. I just wanna ~feel~ the movie the first time around.
Oh! Yeah no I'm glad they still keep dumb love interests out of it as a plot. Po being flirted with was more entertaining than it becoming a "thing", or worse, him and Tigress becoming a thing (it'd also be weird because if you pick up on the lil bits of dialogue, she's a hell of a lot "older" than him)
Animators? Overanalyse children's films? Never.

Yeah, I would definitely say there's more to Kai than just being power hungry. He felt betrayed by oogway who was basically his brother for not agreeing with his methods, and since oogway destroyed his memory and no one remembers who he is or his accomplishments (good or bad), he feels like a failure. You can see how insecure he gets whenever people don't recognize his name. So while he is trying to gain power, a big part of his motivation is trying to reclaim the legacy he feels entitled to while also getting revenge on oogway for taking it away from him. I liked that they stuck with the theme of entitlement, since it kept consistent with the other villains. When looking through the concept art book I noticed there originally seemed to be more of a recurring idea of characters trying to destroy historical information, that didn't all make it into the final film. The more I think about it, I do feel there are some good character motivations there, but again, not quite as strong as the first to. Also his theme music was badass.
I want to be able to watch movies like you do. I try not to analyze it the first time but I end up doing it anyway. It's a bad habit I'm trying to break out of.
