So, I'm not familiar with the alien alphabet. What Erma and Dea saying in the fourth panel?

Gah, I'd have to find a ref and work it out. Simply a formal greeting, no doubt, in native planet vernacular.

Well, the art predates the font by some years, so...

The alphabet also changed over the years, the version in Paul's version of the RPG is the more recent/debugged version.

Without knowing the character set, I can get 'Dea-Htuhok' in Erma's balloon, and 'And to' in Dea's, so I'm guessing it's just a polite greeting in their own language.

Ha! I vaguely remember when the "Albedo" alphabet first got published. I instantly went back and tried to translate this page. For the life of me I can't remember whether it actually "said" something or not. After that, it was trying to translate every sign in the background (walls, doors, posters...) Good ambience for the series.

It did say something exactly in context. As I remember the explanation when they speak like that they are using a thick Dorthanti vernacular.

Don't feel too bad. Funny animal fandom is both wider and older than most people know, so is next to impossible to have a "well rounded" background. Especially with so much of the early activity being limited to fanzines, apas, and short run comics. Albedo nr 2 had only 2000 copies published in 1984 and Rowerbrazzle(sp?) had only something like 50(?) members at about that time. Vootie was even earlier and even less well known (any better knowledge on that?)

All things being relative, I've been a Pogo fan almost since I could read (1963) and I discovered Krazy Kat in the early 1970s. Thar's about as 'Furry' as it got in the Olden Times.

This stuff was done in 1984?? Yeah. I'm part of that group whose gateway furry comic was TMNT. I found Albedo around 1990 I believe.

Doing some leg-work, I've got a decent guess, some of the words are written phonetically.

"Kurteos greetings Dea-Htuhok" "And to eo flit ofiser"

Which would be more properly written:

"Courteous greetings, Dea-Htuholk. "And to you, Flight Officer."
