Nimbalo the Slayer, as he is self-titled.
This is perhaps one of my favorite characters in the Redwall series and my most favorite in the book he appears in (Taggerung). I thought I'd fancy him a portrait.
I actually painted this with ~redwall-club in mind on deviantART.

However, despite him being an otter in all their glory and thus making it obligatory that I am supposed to like him, I kind of don't. I don't doubt he's a hard-ass, but as a character I think he didn't live up to what potential was established for him. A Redwall-born Woodlander raised by ruthless, tribal nomad vermin... and yet he managed to be utterly impervious to all things physical. emotional and especially moral. The idea of such is incredibly intriguing and would make some pretty incredible ideas for the series... but it fell short.
So how can I consider Taggerung to be one of my more favorite entries in the series when I don't like the lead protagonist? Simple, I absolutely love the antagonists. Rather than the usual single relatively intelligent villain commanding a massive army of idiots, it was a small band of bumbling, flawed creatures each with their own desires, these wishes often colliding with one another. I think Jacques here did a great job here by focusing on a small amount of characters and developing each of them.
I wouldn't consider just the vermin to have this kind of laudable detail though. The development of Cregga Rose Eyes acting as the badgermum made for a fantastic lead. She and Mhera were great. Also, Nimbalo of course was a very interesting character that, in some ways, shared many aspects with Martin the Warrior, except maybe not as modest and attentive but just as adventurous.
So now you have my brief literary analysis on... a children's book. -_-
I really like your picture. It's kinda dark though.
