After an encounter with a red fox when I was maybe 10, I decided I wanted one as a pet. I was investigating a drainage near some rail tracks, I heard a rustle in the scrub and turned. Out popped a little red. She couldn't have been more than 2 feet from me, she just looked at me and sniffed a bit before disappearing.
Turns out I was standing pretty much on the front door of her den! I watched her raise her kits that year, and a couple other years too.
Now that I'm grown, I'm trying to find the loophole that will allow me to have one. I know it exists. The laws say one can't own 'wildlife' as pets, but there was recently a news story about a couple with a pet raccoon that couldn't find a home after their landlord wouldn't renew their lease. Nobody would rent to them because of their unorthodox pet!
