It took three weeks, but it felt like a year before an end to this war was in sight. Nomminus and Pilu had been helping the generals and leaders strategize, planning when, how, and where they could attack. Most of their endeavours proved victorious, only twice had the sabers caught them before they could enact plans, this was due to clever and sneaky spies that Pilu was able to sniff out.
Finally, it was time. Time to end this war once and for all, free Khaz, and hopefully get some well deserved peace and quiet. They were gathered with Mela, two other tribe leaders, and their respective generals, inside a large tent, they’d set up a base of operations deep within the mountains, it was close to the keep they were planning to storm, and it was safe, no one could get in or out without dealing with the very intense security. Mela’s daughter Alem had become quite the valuable asset, locating and communicating with other slime beasts, discovering they were much more civilized then previously assumed. They were quite eager to help aid the Eohippus in their cause, the smilodons had driven them down into the deep dark of underground tunnels. So they too wished to see them pay for their actions.
Back in the tent, Nomminus pressed her index finger to a spot marked with a blue ‘X’ on a map on the table they all surrounded. “Alem and I will lead soldiers in a waiting position here, close enough to the keep to hear alarms, but still hidden thanks to our friends, meanwhile Pilu will sneak inside using the sewer entrance that the scouts located three days ago, it leads right into the prison cells, she’ll free anyone trapped, and they’ll attack from inside the keep, once alarms are raised, we’ll rush in and take them out.”
“Soldiers and slimes will remain after Nomminus and Pilu leave with the prisoners, to clean up and claim the keep.” Mela spoke up. “Once it’s claimed we’ll have a great advantage over the sabers should we need to keep up the attack, hopefully their leader will make the wiser choice and surrender, rather than send more fighters.”
The group finalized the last few plans, and then got to work. Nomminus, Pilu, and Alem gathered soldiers and other slime beast and made their way towards the keep under the shadow of night. To keep a quiet approach, they employed a very useful trick they learned the slimes could do, the five slimes engulfed groups of soldiers, Nomminus and Pilu included, those watching from outside would notice the semi-visible forms of the soldiers within the translucent beasts fade away into nothing, then the slimes slinked onwards out of the cave, moving with ease, as though the half dozen or so soldiers they each took within themselves were no longer there.
Like strange living viscous caravans, they made their way through tunnels, out into the dense jungle, it turned out these creatures could absorb and then reform anything they engulfed, including living beings, without harming them in the slightest.
It took them the whole night, but as the first hint of sunlight began to welcome the dawn they had made it to the keep, a deep moat surrounded the stone walls, the slimes slipped quietly in to the water, and lost their opacity and colour, becoming completely invisible about a foot or so below the water’s surface. A glob of slime, barely visible except for the water trailing off it, and the indent it left in the grass, slinked out of the moat directly under the grate that blocked entrance to the sewer… well, blocked entrance for anything other than a smile, it pushed through the open spaces of the grid-like pattern on the grate, small squared off tubes of slime passed through the grate like meat through a grinder, the slime remerging together on the other side once it could touch. It took all of five seconds and then it was making its way into the sewer system, Pilu couldn’t have crawled through on her own, it was far too small a space, she’d get stuck quite fast in the mucky passages, after many turns the slime arrived to a much larger passage, at the end of it, on the ceiling was a dim light from the room above. The slime reached up and pushed through another grate quietly, then hid in a dark corner, it looked as if it were surveying the area. After confirming what obstacles were around, where guards were standing, it then seemed to defy gravity and oozed up the wall behind it, up into a crawlspace between the prison cells and the ceiling, just big enough to reform Pilu’s body and release her. Once free from the slime she had to take a moment to take in her surroundings, it was almost disorienting to close your eyes in a cave, and open them in a prison, in what felt like the time it takes to blink. Her body felt tingly all over like the feeling of a numb foot regaining circulation after sitting on it wrong for too long a time. Once she was ready to go she gave a thumbs up to the slime, which now that it was no longer carrying her, was about the size of a pillow. The slime the slunk off, sneaking by inattentive guards and silently dispensing armour and weapons to the prisoners, Khaz included amongst them, who was surprised, but grateful to have his throwing knives and dagger back.
While this happened Pilu quickly and quietly pickpocketed the keys off a guard, and opened a cell, the prisoner armed and ready to attack, Pilu got up into the crawlspace before the prisoner burst open the door so she wouldn’t be seen, the guards took notice and fights broke out, in the distraction Pilu unlocked the rest of the cells, before she could open the last one, the one Khaz was in, the other prisoners had already made quick work of the guards and proceeded into the rest of the keep. Pilu unlocked the last cell, and swung open the door, Khaz leapt out and scooped her up into a tight hug and a twirl. “Thank you so much!” He said happily, he set her down and Pilu backed up slightly to look up at him, they were no longer the same height like they were as kids all those years ago, but she did not release from their embrace, his arms around her shoulders, and hers just above his hips. “How did you get here?” Khaz asked, surprise and elation in his voice to see her again.
“I got your letter, came to find you, found Nomminus, and had to help fight in the crazy war going on outside.” Their reunion was put on hold, as they suddenly remembered they were still in the prison, they pulled their arms away from each other and drew weapons, Khaz held a throwing knife in each hand, Pilu drew her dark bladed dagger and they ran towards the exit and outside following the fight, Eohippus, Slimes, Smilodons, and Nomminus were all out in the open space of the keep, fighting and brawling. Khaz and Pilu ducked down close to the ground and snuck through the fight, surprising and taking out sabers as they did.
About an hour later the fight was won, the freed prisoners where gathered up, Khaz, Pilu, and Nomminus stood with them as Alem oozed over them, they disappeared within her viscous form and she took off quickly towards the mountain camp, no need for stealth now, and having more of an understanding of her now gooey body and how it worked, she was able to burst through the jungle with an incredible speed, like water rushing towards falls, the feeling of it all felt incredible. Within a few hours she arrived at the mountain camp, releasing her precious cargo so that those with medicinal knowledge could tend to them, most were shocked and almost frightened by the experience of being absorbed and reformed, Khaz felt terribly dizzy, he wobbled and coughed as if to clear his lungs, but there was nothing in them to clear out, Pilu supported him so he wouldn’t fall as they walked over to see the doctors.
“Don’t worry, I had a similar reaction too the first time, it gets easier the more times it happens.” Pilu says with a laugh.
A few hours passed of speaking with the doctors and getting him checked out, there was no injuries or other things to worry about. Other than a bad hunger, he was fine.
Pilu brought him some food which he scarfed down with no regards of manners, at least not until Pilu let a giggle escape. “Oops. Sorry.” He mumbled as he chewed on the mix of food he had stuffed in his mouth.
“No, it’s fine.” Pilu laughed again.
He eventually finished his meal, and the day’s light was quickly disappearing, him and Pilu travelled outside the cave, with permission of their slimy guardians of course, they went to the side of the cave’s entrance, a bunch of rocks, and pieces of tree jutted out from what looked to be a long settled land slide. They climbed up carefully and sat down atop the cave’s opening. Both of them looking up as the sky darkened from it’s fantastic golden red display, to the dark blue veil of night, with countless stars twinkling calmly.
The two talked for a long time, sharing stories about the things they had done, and catching up, it’d been at least four years since they last saw each other.
The conversation went quiet eventually, both of them enjoying the cool night, and each other’s company.
The both took a deep breath and both spoke at the same time in unison. “I…I love you! You do? Really? Yes! Great!” they then stopped and laughed, both of their faces flushed and warm. Khaz placed an arm on her back, and a hand on her shoulder, she placed a hand on their tails as they both intertwined, they looked into each others eyes, a moment of shy hesitation, they both closed their eyes and then Pilu gave him a soft kiss on the lips, which Khaz returned, they kept still like that for a few seconds before pulling their heads away from each other. Opening their eyes and smiling as bright as the stars above them. They curled up close together, watching the night sky quietly, and eventually they fell asleep.
