Apologies for the lack of uploads lately... on the one hand I've been really busy with life and freelance and on the other I can't spend much time drawing stuff for here when I have commissions that I need to finish.
Still though, I was compelled to draw this last weekend while visiting with
sciencefox and
swiftcutter. I'm thoroughly entranced by what I've seen for Zootopia and that enthusiasm worked its way into this. I started off noodling around with the tortoise at the top left and after seeing the progress I thought, hey, wouldn't it be fun to put Judy Hopps into this as a play on the Tortoise and the Hare? I know it's a bit of a switchout for her character, but then I started drawing the second picture and gave her the Bugs Bunny pose and man I just couldn't stop thinking of Sandra Bullock's character in the movie Wrestling Ernest Hemingway. I started thinking maybe Judy would be like a bubbly effervescent nurse in a retirement home whose enthusiasm just ate away at the curmudgeon tortoise she cares for.
...yeah, this went in an offbeat direction. Whatever. I love Judy's design and I loved riffing on this idea.

Her design is just awesome. With those proportions and those long legs she looks like she could walk on two legs and run/hop on four, which is a thing I love. Another thing is I was just looking at a book about Korean art and especially a celadon ware tortoise with hexagonal scutes on its shell like that one, each of which had the Chinese ideogram for 'king' on it.
