Venom staggered backwards, trying to block the blows that rained down on him from Norris. The Lieutenant cursed. He rushed in and lashed out, the claw of his bionic arm latching onto one of Norris' wrists. Venom spun and heaved, tossing the Corporal over his shoulder. With a snap of his wings, Norris righted himself, arresting his fall just in time to land properly.
"Nice try, Sir," Norris said sarcastically.
He charged, driving his shoulder low. The two bats collided. They fell and tumbled on the ground. An elbow cracked across the bridge of Venom's nose, causing his eyes to tear up and blood to flow. The Lieutenant responded, jabbing hard into the Corporal's kidneys. Old emotions and ancient mistrust began to build, the combatants growing more determined not to lose. Norris grabbed Venom by the ears, dragging the Lieutenant's head down as he rammed his knee into Venom's face. Venom grunted, tasting his own blood. He pulled free and growled.
"Bastard."
A flurry of punches, driven by anger, assailed Norris. The Corporal tried in vain to block the attacks. An opening appeared and he clenched his fist, intending to strike. Suddenly a hum filled the air, and gleaming metal dominated his vision, Venom's bionic arm transforming into his energy cannon.
"ENOUGH!"
The two bats jumped, Kommissair Sabine's voice cutting through their battle lust. They looked over, watching as she marched towards them.
"Lieutenant Venom, this is a training drill. No weapons! And Corporal Norris, while you're dedication to taking this seriously is commendable, I do not appreciate you breaking the noses of your superior officers!"
Venom and Norris looked uncomfortable as Sabine chastised them. The Kommissair's eyes narrowed.
"I know you both have history," Sabine continued. "But the past is the past. You are both legionnaires. A team. Remember that."
The two bats nodded, responding in the affirmative. Sabine turned, concluding the training.
"Good. If I have to warn either of you again, you'll be scrubbing out the latrines. Or worse... Dismissed!"
Venom and Norris glanced at each other, a silent apology passing between the two. Venom wiped his mouth, cleaning away the blood.
"Well fought," he said.
Norris nodded.
"You too, Sir," the Corporal replied. "You better go see Klaus, get that nose fixed."
Venom smiled wryly.
"At least you didn't ruin my good looks too much," Venom said.
The two bats wandered off, gathering up their training gear. They knew they would never be close friends, but Sabine was right. They were a team, trusting in each other when it mattered in battle. And in the end, that was all that mattered...
