I love his work, but jesus christ, sometimes a door is just a FUCKING DOOR, not a "yawning cepulchre" or whatever other dicitonary vomit he used, some of his less polished work is like a 9th grade book report where the writer was trying to pad the length.

Yeah he's known for really waxing poetic on stuff, sometimes to the point of it just being a case of 'I don't know what's going on, but it sounds cool'.

Yeah, thats all well and good in the Dream Cycle stories, which are all like an acid trip anyway, but it sticks out like a sore thumb when the stories take place on Earth. Ever read The Music Of Eric Zann? The scary part in that is basically weird violin music and a window XD

But really Stephen King's works are also hilarious. Take for example The Stand, you'd think that the story about a desease that kills 90 procent of the earth's human population would make for a awesome psychological horror drama but instead it gets sillier and sillier when the devil enters and becomes pretty much the inspirational source for the Left Behind series and we all know what comedic gold that one turned out to be...

Most of Stephen Kings works are ridiculous on the surface which is also why they almost never work as film adaptations. They only work when King writes them because of his grasp of writing characters, whcih dont translate well to visuals.

A great deal of Lovecraft's stuff was written at the rate of something like a penny a word. I think this contributed greatly to the tangled prose. However, The Dunwich Horror is truly creepy as hell and an example of how full blown overdoing something really gives it a boost. Oddly, his stories are rarely filmed. Re-animator does not count. I think it is amusing that Lovecraft crossed the country in a bus to visit Robert Howard, another over the top writer I admire.

Lovecrafts works are almot impossible to film with traditional Hollywood methods. There are three really great adaptations, and they're all indie movies. The Call of Cthulhu and The Whisperer In the Darkness, which were both made like they had been filmed in the years they were written, so they're black and white with clothes and props from the 20s and 30s, and Call is a silent film. There's also an animated short based on The Other Gods which is animated in the style of an old cutout cartoon from the 20s.

Thanks for the heads up. Whisperer is a very good story. Traditional Hollywood methods are no longer needed, if the budget is there. Well, I am off to find these films. I love animation but please God no Clutch Cargo!
