Ferrer the blacksmith is a Child of Gemini, and the info about them are as follows:

The Children of Gemini are of a dual nature. They're human, but they can shift to a secondary were form. The human side has characteristics of the animal the shift into, such as spots for a wereleopard, or rounded ears for a werebear. Other distinguishing characteristics are toughed soles and palms, and thus the Children have a tendency to go barefoot.

The change to the secondary form is slow, but it can be pushed, but at the cost of stamina, as it can be exhausting and somewhat painful as the entire structure of the body changes. Some have claimed that one Child of Gemini changed so fast that the skin burst open, revealing a enraged werelion.

There are some artifacts that help the change, granting them additional stamina during the shift, and some are even 'linked' to the clothes they wear, causing them to vanish as they transform.
