The ears are carved out of 4" latex foam. They're very soft and flexible but they're also kinda heavy. Urethane foam would probably been a better choice.

it would be neat to make a hybrid head. A carbon fiber scull with foam to add the details.

Yah. Thats possible with this head. Carbon for the basic shape and then foam for the expression.

Kind of the same way a real face works. The scull is hard and structural, the muscles are softish and make the expression.
