This is where I've been spending some of my down time, helping the other members of my station prep this former M930 military dump truck for the 2016 fire season. The dump boy was removed and the frame was lengthened to accommodate the fire body which was recycled from the last truck. We also removed the PTO driven winch and roll cage/brush guard from the last truck and installed it on this unit. She'll being going out to paint very soon.

Yeah She is a good sized rig..... But what I find funny is that no one ever complains abut the "Militarization" of the Fire Dept. when they get rig like this....... But let the local Police Dept. get a HMMWV (hummer) and you'd think the world had just ended.
Oh yeah, she's a big truck but I'd love to get my paws on some of the other chassis that the State Forest service has. They get to pick through the list pf trucks before we ever get anything...... Now to paraphrase Crocodile Dundee "That's not a truck..... This is a truck"

Hmmm.. I'm all for equipping it with battle shorts. But I think the Chief would have a heart attack. As far as the bumper sticker goes. I think all we need to do is put the old mashed up license plate on it. Hey I only told the guy to push the car out of the way..... Not hit the stupid thing every time he drove out of the woods to reload with water.
Yeah the last one was a late 60's with a standard transmission and a Continental multi fuel engine.
This one is a mid 80's, with an automatic transmission, super singles and central tire inflation.

hmm, someday we'll be able to edit comments...
We picked up one of the refurbed ones a couple years back, upgraded engine and trans and driveline, but then I see that the CITS is all bypassed and one of the tires is on backwards relative to the rest, for some wacky reason, I think it was the guy doing the tires, he couldn't deal with the CITS so they capped it all off, rather dumb. if it sits for a week, I don't think it'll end up with six flat tires. But now in soft mud, no more option to air down.

Well all of the 939 series were supposed to be upgraded to anti lock breaks years ago. They had a problem with the torque converter locking up and if you had an emergency breaking situation the breaks would lock up and stall out the engine. That also caused the power steering to fail and resulted in several accidents. I know that there was a safety order when I was in that we weren't to drive any of the M939's over 40 mph.
If you guys want to hook the CITS back up call the Maine Military Authority in Limestone. They're a great resource when it comes to any wheeled or tracked military vehicle. I know the manifold valves on the CITS can be kind of problematic, so may be why it was bypassed.
Now.... For some additional forestry based equipment porn...... I sooo Want one of these on a trailer behind the forestry truck and ready to go..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoRm3x0lBkk

hmm...... Well if you want this one you have to first go to the Vogosphere..... find the right Que... then fill out one of the cream colored "Illegal Vogosphere Immigration" form(in octuplicate). then after that has been decided (as long as you don't get fed to the ravenous bug bladder beast of Trull) you can get back into the que and fill out the salmon colored surplus govt. equipment and supplies request form. Once that paperwork is processed and hopefully approved you can bring me the taupe and golden rod colored copies... then we can consider letting you place a bid on the truck.
Or you just drive up to Auburn Maine and check out this place. ............... http://www.army4x4.com/index.shtml

Oh yeah she's a diesel..... The specs call for a 240 horse Cummings. Three of the guys at the station are heavy truck mechanics and one of them put a set of twin stack on her out of his own pocket. So going down the road wide open with a full load on, she'll look like she's burning coal.
Seen many of those but never drove one. Come to think of it, I never fought fire from one either. The local station got theirs after a left. The joke is that they got more trucks than firefighters. The county chief keeps on trying to get my to go back and take over the station, but I refuse. To much on my plate at the moment.
There pretty fun to use.... If you're part of the state has large wide open spaces... these things would just keep rolling along all day. But what you guys would really love is the Oskosh HEMMET http://ericsfirepics.com/ME/Maine_F.....estry_6164.jpg
Well we also have that painted on the bottom of the engine. That way someone in a SMART car can look up and know why the sun suddenly disappears. Hmmm ... Perhaps we need to contact your firm when we replace this truck..... I'm sure you guys could come up with something very ummm... interesting for us.
