Hey man, those things were dependable old rigs and the Red Army used them very well.
Actually, after the CIA started delivering Stinger missiles to the Mujahedin, the Soviets changed their protocols and ran their patrols in from the mountains. Basically, Stinger missiles have a safety feature where they cannot be fired directly upward so it seriously negated their effectiveness against Soviet aircraft.
