If I was a reindeer...
I am not a reindeer, but if I was, this is what I would look like.
I had a dream about a black reindeer last night, so I made a quick watercolor sketch of one. I am part Saami and reindeer will always hold a very special place in my heart. When I move further into the country and have land I plan to start up a small herd.
Did you know reindeers are arguably one of the oldest domesticated creatures? There is (limited) evidence that the earliest domestication of reindeer happened around 45,000 years ago with hunters capturing and keeping wild deer to help them hunt. Some people would argue the record should go to dogs, which have some records around 30,000 years old but concrete around 15,000 in China.
They are the domestic version of the north american caribou (the same species, technically) - and are smaller and different a different color (caribous being darker brown/black overall). Though classified as domestic there are wild herds of reindeer and also still living, nomadic cultures that live with and through the herds.
Also, did you know they are actually rather tiny? Females can be as small as 130 lbs, males 200 lbs. They can get larger, in the 300-600lb range (female/male) but compare that to the largest dog breeds!
Thus ends your daily interesting-animal-facts session. Sorry, I just love these guys and wanted to share! :)

Thanks for he info. Very interesting. Did you know reindeer are good eats? My mom lives in Alaska, and I visited her in 2006. We went to a small butcher where regular people take their kills to be cleaned up and cut, and we bought some reindeer, yak, elk, and buffalo. The yak was too tough/gamey, they elk wasn't too great either. The buffalo simply tasted like really good beef. But the reindeer. The reindeer was soooo good. It had a lot of fat on it, but when you grill it, all that fat adds so much flavor. And, you save the fat and use it to cook up some onions and mushrooms, and it's heaven.
Did you know you can't get wild reindeer, only farm raised, as the wild ones are protected.
Anyway, I like your pic here. The grey horns look really good. I like the slight blue you added in for color too.

I've had the chance to taste reindeer before and I was also impressed! I am a big fan of most 'game meats'. I've also had zebra, wild boar, alligator, snake, and all sorts of different things. :) I'll try most anything once!
I'm not sure if we'd end up ever eating the reindeer we raised since they have only one baby per year and are rather valuable in the U.S. to be sold as pets/for show/events - but I wouldn't be opposed to it. :) We'll probably keep goats and pigs to have a little meat for the year.
In Norway people aren't even allowed to keep reindeer if they aren't of Saami descent. I'm not surprised that there are laws governing them in the U.S. too, in the contiguous U.S. they are just treated as domestic (of course there aren't any wild herds out here!)

Well it's not hard to believe that there are wild herds in Alaska. I don't know if they were domestic once, and are now wild, or what. I was unaware they had babies so infrequently, but it doesn't surprise me as they live in a very harsh climate and must make sure their offspring is ready to be on their own before mating again.

Oh, wow. That sounds pretty meaningful - I know some of my ancestors were probably reindeer herders, but can't be sure. Whereas you can be sure, which makes me sort of envious. But now I'm really curious about the dream.

The blue on the far antler is really eye-catching, and I love the look overall. Deer are very spiritual animals as a whole, I find, and I adore when people put some color into their interpretations.
All that aside, when I read the title my brain started going 'If I was a reindeer.. nana nanananana, nana nanananana, see I'd have all the lichen in the world, if I was a reindeer giiiiirl....' to the tune of 'Rich Girl' by Gwen Stefani :x

Caribou are bigger than reindeer, but in both the males are quite a lot bigger than the females. Smaller body size is more effective for the females since finding food where they live can be challenging a lot of the year, but larger size in males is more beneficial for competition with other males, so it's a balancing act. The males can be easily twice the size of the females but overall, reindeer are surprisingly small! :)
Thank you! :)
I think that being a reindeer, living as a wild reindeer does, would be incredibly difficult. If you kept a human brain and lived as a wild reindeer I think it would border on (or fall off the deep end of) torture. But I do feel a close connection to them and if I could shapeshift into one, and borrow the body for awhile, I admit I would really love such a power.

reindeer are cool and they've been interested&inspireing me, wich is reason they happen 2 be my favourite, they're kind a curious, explorer's,
faul, and all the "funny stuff" X>. they know for sure to sit back and enjoy the life, all tho they're cursing mosquitos and the all other buzzing flying bloodsuckers... well alteast i did in lapland during my stay there XD
yes, life could be hard in the wild, but i think/guess if that kind power did exsists/exsisted i had been escaped to wild long ago to live free,
being reindeer would be an honour for me, since their my favourite and doe's not harm earth as much as human.
so yes, as i mean it having human like self-consciousness and a body of reindeer with Anthro & Feral agilities, ability to talk
and advanced "omnious diet" with predator characteristics for living, if someone could give that as present, it would be the ultimate present and last id needed. it might happen/happened, only if the magic lamp of 3 wishes exsist... 8( DX XD
life as such form would be a great honour

anthro part would include standing with back legs and pick stuff with the hoof's of front legs and human arm like aglity.
feral prart would include fast running and the feral reindeer agility issue. and id liked alot such power aswell that u mentioned
