For TidalArch! My webcomic/story
Cleaner fish come in different varieties, but they all have a few things in common. They are invariably the go- between for all races in hygiene . They are known to be bold, no nonsense mer people. They specialize in positions in both hospitals, and bathhouses, and some will offer their services on the road for weary travelers. They can groom, provide dentistry, and some specialized few are known to be healers and therapists. Others are cosmetic artisans.
Cleaners are considered almost complete nuetral ground for interaction. They are the only merpeople considered “safe” to touch a mer-person’s gills (i.e. hair). Running your fingers through someone’s gills is a very personal business for a cold blooded mer person, so any stranger other than a Cleaner to do so is likely to be aggressively reproached. Due to their deep spiritual connection to ch’ulel, Cleaners are allowed and encouraged to groom gill filaments which greatly aid a cold blooded breathing.
It’s an unspoken rule between religions, species, cultures, predators, and creeds that Cleaners remain out of conflict disputes. The only exception to this are a few groups of warmbloods, due to rising conflict between warmblooded merfolk and cold blooded merfolk in general, have attacked a few Cleaners.
Cleaners can refuse any violent or terribly rude client and if they are really ticked off, will make sure that any other Cleaners they know refuse the same client unless some great penance is made. In laymans terms, this means if you are rude to a Cleaner, you won’t be able to go to the dentist, get a pedicure, haircut, hairdye, physical therapy massage, quickcare, tattoo unless you take out the equivalent of a student loan. So, everyone is very courteous to a Cleaner. They will take good care of you. They were literally born for it.
A lemonshark mermaid pictured here, is being pampered here. Sharks are the favorite guests of most cleaner fish, as most sharks tend to be very wealthy and tip generously. Sharks tend to frequent Bathhouses as often as they can.
