Azo is of course unless your eyes deceive you, a Sangheili, from Hesduros, or so he lead to believe. He holds a small "secret" that sets him slightly apart from the run-of-the-mill Sangheili, and he literally does not have knowledge of it himself!
He has the "inate" gift of being able to access Forerunner technology and weapons without being locked out via a species seal.
"How is that possible?" you ask? Well Azo had gone by the name of something else in a "past life": He had been a human at one point! Part of the backstory, is when Azo was younger and not a Sangheili, he had been captured with a lot of other humans by the Covenant during an outer colony attack, and instead of being slaughtered like the rest of humanity the zealous aliens usually did, they instead manipulated their captives on the genetic, physical and mental level utilizing a reverse engineered Forerunner Genetic Resquencer Device. This device was created in an effort and test, to see if the humans could be utilized as brainwashed followers of the Covenant, instead of a simple mass genocide. The changes were physical first, changing him into a full adult Sangheili, while his mind was that of a twelve year old. One of the side effects of the change, would be amnesia -no recollection of what had happened before the changes directly. another side effect is a cryo-genic effect on the aging process of the body: The body will actually not age until a certain point in time, once that time is "reached", the body will age naturally as it should. Confused on what had happened and where he was, his captors gave him a new name and identity, knowing full well after a few tests and questions, that he would never remember whom he had been. Under the suggestion of the head San 'Shyuum of the project and a small handfull of Sangheili, Azo was told he was a warrior from Hesduros, and that he had been misplaced in the battle, and took a nasty blow to the head, but wasn't injured to warrant an honorable death, or to be left for dead.
During the H-C War, Sangheili honor from their culture dictated that it was honorable to die in battle, and if their own blood was spilled, the large Saurians would actually go berserk, or actually terminate themselves, nor did they like doctors, viewing those that "spill blood" in that manner, the lowest of the low.
Taken to High Charity along with the others that had survived the experiment, all of them were inducted, taught and integrated into Covenant society and way of thinking, with mostly large success rates.
Due to being told he had been a minor in the battle, Azo 'Salcam (a play on his actual name) was sent through a refresher course, to "remember" how to fight. During a mission much later in the middle of the 2540's, Azo unintentionally accessed a piece of forerunner technology, and was observed doing this by a superior officer. Bewildered and intrigued, this was brought to the attention of the High Prophets -Mercy, Regret and Truth-, whom were actually unaware of the experiment project -it was that secret, and the Sangheili under the science San /Shyuum were sworn to secrecy, on pain of death if word ever got out. Over time and even throughout the war, this former human was under going mental changes as well, his "human-side" being engulfed and over taken by that of the Sangheili, though the human genome that for an unknown reason given to them eons ago by the Forerunners, had allowed him the "grace" to access their technology.
The Big Three demanded a demonstration, to prove that this wasn't just some fantasy, or delusion. Sure enough ,Azo managed to access a forerunner device right before their very eyes, though he himself didn't know why he was able to perform such a feat. Being put under observation and kept close, the Prophets eventually decided to induct the minor into the Ministry of Fervent Intercession -a sect of the Covenant that was in charge of securing and procuring Forerunner Relics and Data. Being unexpectedly shot up into the rank of Zealot, Azo was would go through oddly enough not very much training, the Prophets seeing him more of a tool than anything else, and required Forerunner material as soon as he was deemed ready enough to be sent into the field, and would be forced to "learn by doing" instead. Thankfully (and this is an assumption), being a Zealot meant one had more freedom than the ranks below; Azo was allowed to requisition personal armor if he chose to, and took the opportunity to order armor made for him from his home world, and kept his armor all through the Human-Covenant War. Sangheili valued their armor highly, and to disrespect it, would be to disrespect yourself.
Azo expressed a lot of interest in the use of the Type-1 Energy Sword, and happily practiced, sparred and fought to better himself with it, and proved quite adept in swordsmanship. This is because back in a fencing club I had been in during highschool, I was really good at getting past the opponent's defenses and tapping them on the chest, as well as not getting hit myself.
Salcam would participate mainly in the search for relics as his job description entailed, and would even take on support roles in engagements against humanity, and even other aliens from time to time (seriously there is a lot more alien life than just the covenant guys -_-). A few highlights of his career would be surviving the backfired-turned massacre of Draco 3 with only a small fist full of Covenant survivors -that wasn't his first massacre to be a part of, Sargasso to name a few, and even had the pleasure of playing "Field Master" in a decent portion amount of missions, due to Zealots being allowed to do so, and was actually unlike many fieldmasters and higher ups, was mostly kind-hearted and considerate of those underneath him, which instilled loyality towards him by his troops -a feat and skill that would assist him much later in 2553-54; Azo was more experienced and comfortable with commanding ground forces than space forces, having a small phobia of dying in space. He even managed to survive the quagmire that was the Battle of Reach -mainly sent there to look for possible artifacts and any data the humans may have gathered if possible. During the last leg of the battle, he was scooped up along with countless other troops, though the reason was not fully explained as to why until the fleet he had unwillingly tagged along with -Fleet of Particular Justice- had come upon a strange ring-shaped construct hanging nearby the world of Threshold. Many interesting and even horrifying events would occurring during Salcam's time there, some of which occasionally haunt him to this day. Some months later, the zealot would find himself fighting on the enemy's very homeworld -Earth, but if only for a while, for he was recalled and sent to yet another one of the strange rings, which he learned were weapons of unimaginable power, and secretly dreaded setting foot near any of them, remembering what had occurred last time.
Unforeseen was the Great Schism, but what's worse? High Charity had been infiltrated and began to be overrun by the Parasite! Fearing for his very life, Azo and what would then become a handful of survivors -kind of a repeating pattern here isn't it?- looked for a way off the station, they would need a ship, any ship. Fighting their way through the walking stink balls known as the Jiralhanae, as well as the Flood, Azo and what was left of those he managed to gather for an escape attempt, managed to commandeer a now Brute affiliated CAS Assault Carrier, and thanks to the confusion, managed to fight their way to the bridge and cease control, sealing off sections of the ship -they'd deal with those with thought of the Prophet(s) being the true way much later. Unfortunately for those who fought in the docking area that housed the large vessels of the defense fleet, many of them were left behind, the zealot not taking any chances of allowing the Flood on board; a single spore or infection for would spell certain doom for the whole vessel if he had delayed any longer. Narrowly making it through the ensuing chaos around the station, the stolen Assault Carrier slipspace jumped to safety, never to return for the "major" events of the war. Other than a few mishaps and other escapades during the last week or month of 2552, Azo and the remainder of the ship's crew that had been sorted out, went underground and off the grid, waiting and biding their time. It was during this time, a certain "group", founded by Azo himself and few trusted friends-turned followers slowly began to come to fruition; that is a story for another time...
*Fast Facts:
-Azo is eight feet, two inches tall.
-Interestingly enough and unknown to him, his mother had survived the Human-Covenant war, but the two would never know of each other's existance.
-Unknowingly, Azo had defeated and killed his own father during a mission in the late 2540's.
-During the end of the Human-Covenant War, and very early 2553, Salcam actually travels to Hesduros, having never actually been there in his whole life, and decides to learn more about Sangheili culture, and even has a home constructed there, upon which he settles down a bit for reflection and plans what to with himself, now that the Prophet's have ousted his species, and took pride in knowing for certain now, that the foolishness of the Great Journey was indeed all a shame, having had doubts after hearing about it during his earlier days in the old Empire.
-He does end up going to Sangheilios and seeing Thel 'Vadum, but has little to no interaction with him (I AM NOT MARY SUING, I DO NOT HAVE ANY INFLUENCE ON ANYTHING IN THE HALO UNIVERSE).
-Does get caught up in the fighting between the Servants of Abiding Truth and the (early versions) Swords of Sangheilios, opposing Thel's alliance with the humans, believing it to be foolish, and a horrible idea.
-Azo 'Salcam is mentally and "biologically"/"Technically" 22 years old at the end of the Human-Covenant War.

That is interesting. And I think quite appropriate for a human turned sangheili. when I do see the design without a helmet, I sometimes think it was formerly human as the neck is a bit larger than it's neck creating a ridge, making me think that it was where the back of its head once was when it was a human. There are a really lack of human turned sangheili transformation fanfictions out there.
