As a tattoo artist I live and breath this stuff... from a medical standpoint (confirmed by my doctor) skin surface wounds take 1.5 to 2 weeks to heal on an average person. This time frame when it comes to healing can be effected by weight, tattoo location, and overall health. Legs for instance take almost a full month to heal up because of their distance from the heart.
It also depends an on excellent relationship between the tattoo artist and the client. My goal as a tattoo artist is to give adiquit instruction to prevent the client from scabbing, prevent them from touching the tattoo without washing their hands and to prevent them from damaging the new tattoo in the bath, the sun, or by putting the wrong kind of ointment on. The clients job is to follow my instructions to the letter, and not do anything stupid to it.
It is also very highly dependent on the skill of the tattoo artist themselves. My overall goal when tattooing is to be consistant, and keep landing my needle in the sweet spot right at the top half of the dermis layer of skin. When a tattoo artist goes to deep, runs their needle to long, or runs it to fast they can cause severe damage to all layers of the skin and create scarring (any part that's upraised). They can also cause the tattoo to blow out. http://assets.rebelcircus.com/blog/.....06/BODY-P1.jpg
So long story short there are various healing times for various people, but a well done well cared for tattoo should heal up in about 2 weeks.
