Happy to say that the Out of Position novel, by Kyell Gold, is scheduled to release next weekend at FC! (And it'll be available on Sofawolf.com, after the convention, if you're interested and unable to attend!)
kyell was kind enough to send a photo of the book so I could see how the cover printed. :]
For those who may not know, I did the cover and 9 interior illustrations for the book, plus chapter heads. At FC, I do believe there's some kind of author signing scheduled at the Sofawolf dealer's table on Saturday. Check with them for exact times!
Here's the book synopsis, from Kyell Gold's website:
"Dev is a football player at Forester University, a small liberal arts college where football isn't a big deal. He and his teammates still get to strut around and have their pick of the girls on Friday nights at the local meat market. That's all he wants--until he meets Lee, a fox with an agenda and an attractive body.
Problem is, Lee's not a girl. He's a gay fox who never thought he'd fall for a football player, until he met Dev. Their secret romance is hard enough for them to handle, but that's only the beginning of their problems, as their friends, family, and co-workers keep mounting the pressure to find out what's going on. If they're exposed, they could lose the careers they've fought so hard for.
Going it alone would make everything easier. If only they could stop fighting long enough to break up. "

Well, its not a paperback size book like the little ones you'd find in a bookstore for 8 bucks or so. Its a trade paperback, usually about 6x9 inches. Even then, consider that furry writing is a very niche market. Whenever you're dealing with a small audience and an independant publisher, the individual price is going to be a bit higher. Having purchased several books from Sofawolf and being a furry publisher myself, it seems that $20 is about the average price now for a furry TPB format novel.
That price isn't because of any massive profit for the author or publishers, its mostly to pay for the higher cost of printing on a smaller print-run than say, Stephen King would have.

https://www.sofawolf.com/catalog go to Kyell Gold, and you can get it there Jan 31st I believe, but his other books are WONDERFUL as well. I recommend "Volle", "Pendant of Fortune", "Prisoner's Release and Other Stories" all of those are marvelous books.
The best way to get into furry fiction is to first go through furry comics and work your way up (I personally think!) My recommendation if you do try a furry comic first is to get Associated Student Bodies because it's just a wonderful comic.
Kyell Gold is a wonderful author and writes pieces that are purely fantastic and you'll want to read again and again, so if you do go for the furry literature, then start with the Gold and move your way around from there.

Something about the way that it's written makes my teeth hurt...
I have nothing against the author, in fact were on good terms.
I have nothing against the plot, in fact the plot and storyline are fantastic.
Alas, the writing is above average but it's just the AIR... the atmosphere, the attitude of the way that it's written.
It has too much swagger, is how I would put it.
I'm very picky when it comes to literature; being a writer myself, and I have a feeling that the main reason why this is a popular story/ Kyell is a popular author, is the genre that he wirtes. Erotic literature snags people's attention naturally.
This particular story just happened to have an intriguing, somewhat-tender subject that some can relate to... but with a slightly trashy tongue.
I simply couldn't take it seriously as a novel.
So, maybe it's just me, because nobody else is complaning.
Even romance on a topic such as this one can have taste, and my problem is that it just doesn't.

He could have read the first two parts on yiffstar, and made his judgment based on that. Nothing in his comment indicates that he's basing it solely on the back cover description.
I agree with him, while the writing is actually quite good, there's something about it that just irritates me.

I've read what Kyell puts up online and he/she is a great writer. But for a 300+ paperback it's a tad much.
Of course, we're talking about a furry story made by a small-time writer being published by a furry publisher. Not to mention the illustrations by Blotch. So I guess 20 dollars is an appropriate price...

A quick search on Amazon tells me that the Penthouse Letters books have a list price of 7.99, which is standard for mass market paperbacks (it's usually either that or 6.99, but they do have these newer "tall" ones that run about 9.99). As for Anne Rice, Exit to Eden has a list price of 13.95 for the trade paperback (a much more common price for TPs), and the Beauty series are $15 each for TPs (again, within the common price range for TPs).
So no, it's not the fact that it's erotica, it's the fact that it's specifically gay furry erotica. A much more limited market.

Well of course when the book first comes out in hardcover it's going to be more expensive. That applies to all books (except for many romance novels, which usually go strait to mass market format, and cheap MMP at that).
I apologize if I come off as nitpicky or something, I'm just bored, and I work at a book store, so this stuff interests me.

Having several books from Sofawolf, I think the production quality is as good as you would get from any smaller publisher, and better than many I've seen. They do a fantastic job, their covers are spot-on perfect in matching the original artwork, and the editing is fantastic. Add to that an amazing author, and it's well worth the price, since it's a trade-paperback size, not a smaller standard paperback.
Ahh, can't give any details, cause I can't possibly know the industry as well as someone who works in it, but the paper in a Sofawolf book seems to be white on edge, rather than the yellow tint many have, the glue is almost invisible (color next to the paper), the font is clear and smaller than what I'm used to seeing in a paperback, and the books have a "feel" similar to that of a book from Signet or Tor.
there are atleast hundreds of types of glue ^^ and there are also thousands of paper types if you consider what the paper is made out of and how thick it is and if its long grain or short grain ^^ and how good the stitches are, and how much glue was used, how the printing came out, what font was used and so on ^^ But it looks good from a "normal" stand of point lol ^^ God im a geek ^^ But hey its what im paid for
Okay, I have alot of books that are only made in paperback. Well, I reread them and really like them, so...they're bent outta shape non good quality made paperbacks. Is there any place where I could like send the book to and either get it made into a hardback? or a company that can scan the book or something and make a hardback and print it on the hardback? I apologize for the terrible description.
Its okay i know what you mean ^^ basicly the process is they would scan the paperback cover in. then fix it up in the computer and then they would make a hardback cover out of it. Though i believe you would have to order many books probably. I dunno if there is like a small company that does this. Since it takes alot of work setting up the pr inting machines for the paper they use on the hardback covers. But you can ask around the smaller commercial printing factorys. they might help. the bigger ones probably wont.
