Well, The VF-1 is by no means a cannon fodder mecha, but the term is associated with the standard type because of the inexperience of the pilots behind the controls, those that can survive their first sortie are usually given a customized variant of their craft, granted most of the changes are purely cosmetic but when a pilot is promoted from recruit to lieutenant or captain, etc, they are then upgraded from the standard A type(recruit/cannon fodder) to the J type(junior officer/experienced) and finally the S type(CAG officer/Ace). I guess to make myself more clear, the VF-1 is only as good as the pilot behind the controls, it is just that the standard colors are associated with new and inexperienced pilots and as such run the high risk of getting shot down by an enemy craft. (the term cannon fodder is used by an opposing army or force when describing an easy kill)

In my comic he starts out as more of an engineer but later becomes a pilot as the war intensifies.

cool, so what dose he fly a VF-1S, VF-1J, or a V-22 since sonic get's a VF-19.

I was thinking something like the VE-1 Eliteseeker (A variant of the VF-1 that is designed for long range recon and electronic warfare) since he isn't much of a combat pilot but due to his intelligence could definitely be a vital asset as the eyes and ears on the battlefield

unfortunately its only a macross TV series source book, still having trouble finding a macross 2 source book

the sonic custom reminds me of the M.P type used in Macross II if you remember them

yep I remember those, strange how the U.N in Macross 2 had a valk that only worked in the atmosphere where as the VF-1 could operate planetside and space ^^

So, THAT is what happened to Max's old Valkyrie! It got stolen to be used by anthro hedgehog from parallel universe.
