They left Thorbardin in the early morning, the sun was just dawning. A fresh breeze ran through the rocks of the dwarvish mountain while the party swiftly made its way to the Plains of Dust. What was the plan? Reaching Tarsis. For what reason, Brimelle couldn't tell, she only knew it had something to do with Vorador and some kind of old fairy-tale character. What was his name? The reaper? She couldn't remember.
She was pretty much lost in her thoughts as they marched through the desert, only aware of the sand beneath her hooves and the raising sun over their heads. She felt grateful for being naked, at first, but was then swiftly obliged by Kon es Kaz and Vorador to wear something heavy to protect herself from the sun rays.
Midday was approaching. The temperature was rising and the sand became scorching. Soon enough, Aliranne showed that even mages aren't heatproof and started to limp behind the marching group. Swiftly, at least as swiftly as the sand would concede her, the centaur neared the human girl, offering her a ride through the insidious desert. It didn't take much, though, for the sun to give the poor girl the final blow; just in the moment when they were in sight of what looked like a small river, Aliranne fell from Brimelle's back, landing in the sand, unconscious, a white foam forming at the corner of her mouth. Kon es Kaz immediately went to the red mage, lifted her in his arms and ran for the stream as if there was no tomorrow.
The rest of the party, weary for the midday sun, tried to keep up, but soon fell behind. When they reached the shore, Kon was already tending to Aliranne; Vorador lent a hand while both Brimelle and Ruru took the opportunity to cool themselves in the flowing water. They restarted the journey soon enough, although Aliranne still layed unconscious. They got extremely lucky, finding a cave in which they decided to spend the night and rest: they still had some road ahead of them. Aliranne regained consciousness and soon they all fell asleep after building a small bonfire to warm each other.
The night was uneventful for most, but not for Brimelle. Nightmares in the shape of another centaur crept over her, instilling fear in her mind, leaving her tossing and turning in the cobweb weaved by her own terrors. She woke up, screaming, realizing that she had been actually moving during her sleep, kicking Vorador in the back. She could do nothing but apologize as they all looked at her, almost offended by her actions. But everything quickly returned to normal. Aside for one thing.
A near Behir, hearing the turmoil coming from the cave, had approached it silently, blocking the only way out with his huge, blue, scaly body. Brimelle took it on herself to block the creature before he could make any damage; after all, it was her fault in the first place if he was there, in that moment. She went up to him, showing him the dwarven brooch.
"I wot that thy species is prone to the art of trade. I, then, hast a trade to propound: this brooch was made by dwarven hands, f'r a hero to wear. I tender it in exchange f'r peace between mine party and thou."
The Behir considered the offer before snatching the brooch from the extended centaur hands, disappearing in the sand.
The next morning, the party got up early, starting their journey once again, reaching Tarsis in the afternoon. As they approached the city, Brimelle noticed how it was full of Knights of Neraka everywhere: walking around with the symbol of Branchala on her chest would have been like screaming "Hey, I'm a goody two-shoes, come and kill me, please!". She hid the necklace in one of her bags, hoping that no one would have inspected them, or anyone in her group, of course.
Suddenly, just as they were walking down the street, a little girl appeared in front of them. The dirt covered her soft pink skin while her red messy hair fell over her face, covering slightly her deep green eyes. She reminds me of myself, sort of, thought Brimelle hinting an ironic smile, but there's something... odd about her.
"P-please, sir.. do you have anything I could eat?"
Her voice sounded so feeble and faint. It was plain that she was weak and starving. Kon es Kaz, without further ado, took out of his backpack some cheese, offering it to the little girl. The child looked at the cheese in her hands, then looked up at the minotaur. Her mouth slowly shifted into a big smile as her eyes full of hope were screaming. "Thank you, thank you!". She ate the cheese before clinging to the armored leg of the giant anthropomorphic cow, repeating endlessly.
"Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!"
Kon es Kaz looked down at the little girl. He smiled and then raised his head towards his party members.
"Can I keep her?"
The rest of the day was spent selling some gems, eating in an inn and trying to find where the heck that little girl came from. She didn't remember a thing, not even her name. Kon resolved in calling her Chaldar, "flame-spire" in Kothian language, and adopting her as if she were his own, but Brimelle was still feeling edgy about that strange, peculiar kid.
Vorador, in the meanwhile, had found what he was looking for: the location of an ancient library, right in the desert, protected by an enchanted door, guarded by a riddle. Before leaving Tarsis to reach the entrance to the library (not too far away from there), Kon es Kaz brought Chaldar to the temple of Mishakal, leaving her to the cares of the various clerics of the city.
Finally, the party was once again on the road, looking forward for this new adventure. They soon arrived at the enchanted door. The majestic piece was adorned with three high reliefs: Mishakal, Paladine and Takhisis. The first two were on top, extending their palm towards the latter, who laid on her knees under a basin in the stone of the wall/door. A small groove connected the hands of the two good deities and the center of the basin while above everything else was the engraving in Ergothian:
"When the flame of kindness burns the darkness, the light of innocence shines."
Vorador tried using his spell "Light" between the hands of husband and wife. Immediately, that light flowed through the groove, reaching the center of the basin, and then stopping. Passing the hand over the spot where the light beam ended, Ruru could clearly feel a second basin inside the basin.
Basinception.
"Ok, we got the light. Now, for the flame..."
Everyone started thinking, wondering how to make the flame of kindness. Also, they had no idea of how to make the darkness! They kept trying and trying until Ruru lit the tip of the wooden side of an arrow and put it right into the second basin. Magically, the flame detached itself from the arrow, remaining floating inside the basin. They were all pleased, but they still needed one element.
How to make shadows, how to make shadows. Vorador tried to cast spells at the door, but the damage he was dealing came back to him as soon as it was cast. Kon even tried to wreck everything by slamming himself on the cold magical stone.
And then Brimelle said.
"I know, it's the kid!"
Everyone turned to glare at her, especially Kon.
"No, it can't be. She's innocent, why in the name of Sargas would you think otherwise?!"
"I wot it's her, she wilt be! We found her randomly in the street, she doesn't remember a thing about her past, not yea her name! She wilt hast been sent by the gods to help us! It wilt be a sign! Listen to me!"
But no one was listening to her.
