Let me share with you some memories of my childhood.
WARNING: Long post is long.
You know, The King of Fighters was a big thing during my childhood. Heck, come to think about it, not only KOF but the whole SNK was a big thing for every kid here in Colombia (Or ar least where I live) during the 90's and early 2000's. For years and years, SNK games were the only games every kid played at the arcades. Yes there were MK 2 and 3 and those games were pretty popular too, but after a time, nobody kept playing them. Street Fighter 2? Maybe some kids played that on a Super Nintendo, but just when there wasn't anything else to play. Tekken? "Meh". Darkstalkers? I think I only played that game once, and I was the only kid who touched that arcade. Killer Instinct? What the hell was that? No, SNK ruled the entire arcades. Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug, and, of course, KOMFF or KING OF MOTHERF*CKING FIGHTERS!!
OMFG, KOF was everywhere!! From '94 to 2003, kids spent all their money playing those games and they were really pro. When you didn't have enough cash to play, at least you had a really good time just watching them play and doing those amazing combos. As some of you may know, I love figthing games, but I suck balls at them (except for Injustice. I beat everyone and their mothers in that game :la: ) so I never had a competitive nature, I just spent the few coins I could get from my parents and tried to beat the game to see the ending of each team (back then I didn't speak english so I was lucky that most of those games were traslated to spanish), but, if I was't beat by the computer at stage 1 (those bastards from the arcades always put the difficulty at the max level to drain the credits from the clients XD) then another kid challenged me and beat me faster that I could say "Dude, let me finish the story!". I think that the only KOF game where I was pretty good was KOF 2003, my team when I wasn't looking for the story mode but a good fight was K', Athena and Tizoc. And speaking of story, The King of Fighters was probably the only fighting game series where I actually knew and enjoyed the plot. I always say that the main reason why I played video games is the story, but fighting games were an exception. Not counting the reboot of MK and Injustice (and maybe Tekken) I don't know and don't care about any plot from any fighting video game ever, I just look for a fun game and good character designs.
The story of KOF was always divided in arcs:
- '94 and '95 was the Rugal arc, which was just ok. Really cliché plot but still enjoyable.
- From '96 from '97 was the Orochi arc. For many fans, the best arc in the entire series. A perfect blend of japanese mythology and pretty badass fighting video game, with memorable characters, kickass music and a plot very well written from a fighting game.
- '98 was a dream match, not story at all but still considered one of the best KOF games and fighting games overall.
- From '99 to 2001 was the NEST arc, and this is where the series started losing their mojo. Don't get me wrong, I liked the NEST saga. It introduced most of my favorite characters from the series: K', Kula and Angel. A quick trivia: I like K' so much that my e-mail has his name. Good lord, even my OC JJ' has this little ' thingy in his name just because it reminds me how badass K' was (yeah, yeah. not original at all but I regret nothing). But yeah, the NEST saga started the ending not only for this incredible saga, but for SNK as well.
- 2002 was also a dream match, and it was probably the last good old classic KOF.
- 2003, XI and XIII was the Ash arc (XII was another dream match and probably the worst KOF ever), and it was ok, but, I was older back then, and I played so many new games that I forgot about KOF so I don't really know and don't care about the plot here. Gotta admit, I still loved the gameplay and I think Ash was a good new main protagonist. He's definitely not Kyo or K', but as a protagonist, I really liked his flamboyant design and mischievous personality. You never knew if he was a good or a bad guy or what he had in mind, but he definitely was plotting some big sh*t. I really like those type of characters. He was like Ocelot from the Metal Gear series, but more gay.
Recently, a new KOF was announced to the PS4, and even when I share the same negative reaction about the new 3D graphics (They look the same as the old KOF Maximum Impact games. you know? THOSE PS2 GAMES FROM 2004 AND 2006!!) I'm still happy that SNK still tries to give KOF the big importance it deserves, and, considering how good KOF XIII was (gonna miss those beautiful 2D graphics, tho), I really wish nothing but the best to this big epic franchise that made me so happy.
Sorry for the long post, but drawing Angel I felt really nostalgic, so I really wanted to share this with you.
^^ Hope you like it.
