Here's usually how I do the digital pictures...
It starts with a paper sketch (I have trouble sketching in oC!)
then I zoom in a lot and do a thin outline (see how the lower part of the body looks even thiner? I got lazy)
Then I go over that lineart and make it a little more defined.
After that I usually put the flat colors (I really dunno why I do it...)
And finally I try to give it some shading (which certainly failed here...)

Hmm...flat colors seems to work pretty nicely; even just a little shading shows the extra effort you put into your work.
I suppose that those who draw and color tend to appreciate even this so-called "failed shading." You can just say that it's a picture taken in a very bright photo studio...or something...
