[He fell back into his chair, arms tired, eyes lifeless.... Where had his life gone? He had once been so talented. An engineer, at that, with two degrees under his belt. But now this. A steady desk job working at some famous company. The pay was good, and he was well supported by it. There was no danger of losing his job, but he would never climb the ranks. He didn't want this life. Where had his life gone...?

The creaking of a windowsill echoed behind him, he would have looked, but fear gripped him like an icy heart chills the blood. Footsteps. The window closes shut. Someone was in his house, and they knew he could hear them.

"Who's there?!" he shouted, hoping to scare them off. The lamp beside him exploded in a shower of sparks, causing him to jolt.

And then the rest.

His world was plunged into darkness, and he sat there, motionless. A pair of hands gently slid around his neck as a dark figure loomed over him, just barely illuminated by the light of the stars outside, and a glowing orb of malice and disdain that floated just within the confines of a hollow shell. The orb flew at him, he screamed, then he went silent, and then, he was gone.]
