Some may recall me mentioning a tradition I have with my son of trying to find something special to share with him prior to heading off for a long appointment, or surgery. What you see here is the result for the forthcoming procedure slated for January 27th, 2016.
My son just turned nine yesterday, January 19th. It made me very happy to know the earliest surgery slot was AFTER his birthday. It also was nice that our "Temmie" shirts arrived on his birthday, too!
Although it was meant to be something special for him and I to wear on the surgery day, my son really wanted to wear his Temmie to school today. It was nice, too, since some of the kids knew about Undertale and had lots of fun with him.
Something really neat that we learned is that, according to some, the Temmies are based after Mr. Saturn from Earthbound. Ethan and his best friend LOVE Mr. Saturn. So the fact that Temmie may have been inspired by Mr. Saturn was just icing on the cake! :)
When I'm prepping for surgery next Wednesday, I'll be wearing my shirt as my son goes to school here at home, which will be over 200 miles away. We'll be connected through knowing we're each thinking of each other and eager to be together again once the surgery and respective recovery process is complete.

Temmies are just downright silly. I originally thought they were a pun on cute characters in games / anime. However, I did a little reading a few days back and it seems a more common belief is they are based off of Earthbound's "Mr. Saturn".
Temmies are really silly to encounter. There is also a random event when you ride on the Ferryman's Boat in which the boat turns itself into a Temmie. :)

That's a really good question. Especially since I can truly say I've never heard anyone in the blind community, or who works with those who are visually impaired, ever discuss the matter.
Perhaps the Fictional Aspect is a result of society typically linking blindness with old age? It is more common to go blind after you are elderly than as a youth. So that could explain it. Otherwise, all I know is baldness is a trait carried over through family genetics.

I don't blame her. Being Tem fills you with 'Detemination'! Plus colleg degrees are affordable and help you better understand deep history of Tem. :)
This was a very special moment as, prior to the surgery series that would result in the complete loss of my eyesight, I wanted to make sure my son and I were connected despite being 200 miles apart. He had his shirt on for the day of the first procedure and so did I.
This surgery was on a school day when he was still in Elementary School. He had known of how I was losing the rest of my sight for years and, for me, I believed sharing shirts would help him feel a bit better as he had school as I went under.

It was. And, although I have been 100% blind since the end of 2016, I still do what I can to make sure I find ways to interact with my son through using various 'blind friendly' technologies.
Fun fact is, despite no eyesight, I can play two mainstream games with my son. These being 'Mortal Kombat' and 'Pokémon Go'. Both have ways in which 'sound' is used to help me know where I am at and what I should do. (Of course, I need him to do those things on them that are not blind friendly)
I worried a lot of my total blindness making me seem like a lousy father. Though it has not been as bad as I feared and, hopefully, I can help show others that losing an important part of their physical self doesn't mean you are a lost cause and/or unwanted.
