The beads do have some depth, so I suppose you could technically call them 3D! I usually work on one plane, but I've seen other perler artists build boxes or other structures out of beads by interlocking ironed sheets. Minecraft cubes and Mario blocks are really common. If you look up "perler 3D" on Google Images, there are some cool examples.
