The Hanged Man represents the rather black and white choices in life: up or down, yes or no. The image usually depicts pittura infamante, an execution of Italian traitors way back when. During this one's concept stage, I was excited about the color palette (my Tarot is definitely inspired by Dragon Age Inquisition cards), but took a while to come up with what would work. Obviously a dinosaur that had accidentally strangled or hanged itself upside down was not going to work, or fit with the naturalistic visual themes.
I liked the idea of an Archeopteryx playing a bit more of a trickster type role: he's happy to be upside down, and plays to the subversions often represented by the Hanged Man. The creature itself is also a mystery within the realm of fossils and the record of natural life as the first bird (but maybe not.)
As excited as I was about that color scheme, man it ended up being hard to do. This painting took forever.
