Sarkanj is Cheharraphix's little brother, and one of the major villains in Mark of the Conifer. In many ways he's an antithesis to a lot of elements that show up in animal fiction: the heroes almost always have an ally that can understand things beyond animal intelligence (like Blackberry in Watership Down) and heroes often use the "magic" of fire to fight their enemies (Ratha's Creature and both Fire-Bringer and the Firebringer trilogy.) I decided to flip both: what if you had an evil Smart Guy who knows how to use fire?
