answering your thing on twitter here (because mine's private so you wouldn't see it if i answered there and also the poll doesn't work for me for some reason):
i think this is a really good approach to references. the flats help show where markings are and what base colors to use, while the shaded ones give an example of how light would reflect off the character (which is especially useful for characters with fur/textures), as well as reveal subtle curves (like the eyebrow-looking highlights) that wouldn't be apparent on a flat-colored reference.
obviously if you can only use one type it should be flats because they're easier to interpret, but having both kinds at the same time can be incredibly helpful.

AH THANK YOU, this is very very good input omg! it is true that shading is really nice for texture, especially when it's not a "normal" furry character. like if it's a unique species. and yeah, agreed that it's better to have flats than nothing. I'm mostly worried that the flats are too small or too uh... "chibi" to provide good information, but i think it's clear enough with the rest of the reference, hopefully.
