The Fancy Fox Cafe by Bleedingsouls

Cam:

“Trust me this was my favorite hangout spot in college. Staff are very friendly.” I said to my lover a amalgamation of species but he's primarily mixed with a bear and a kangaroo. His fur is a orange color. As we neared the glass doors which had the name of the cafe written on both doors in neat gold cursive.

He looked at me nervously and rolled his eyes a little
“Yeah but, it's my birthday” the male protested.
“Yes I know stud but, I want something warm to drink because I'm cold. I promise we will go do something you want when we're done here.” I said holding the glass door open for him. He reluctantly enters the establishment and looks around seeing the many others about most of them talking to companions around them. He looks back at me as if to say something but Vyrgil just keeps looking and says nothing. I pat him softly on the shoulder.

“Why don't you grab that table over there in the corner by the window. And I'll get our drinks.

“Okay.” He says forcing a smile for my benefit. He then walks over and slumps into the chair nearest the wall, his back facing the wall. His eyes watching me intently from the corner. I stand in the line waiting to be served.

I'm greeted by a snow hare whose fur is as white as the snow. She welcomes me to the fancy fox with a smile. She’s wearing a bright red apron it looks very new there’s no stains of any coffee or drinks on it that happen occasionally when working. The apron has the logo of the fancy fox on it, which consists of a red foxes head, and the name of the cafe beneath it.
“Welcome to The Fancy Fox what can I get you?” She asked. It takes her a moment to recognize me.

“Hi Jenny, I say with a big grin. They still got you here slinging beverages and sweets I see.”

She laughs and then her eyes widen. “Cam? Matcha latte right? And for your um...friend?”

This would be my turn to laugh and I do. “ Yes that’s right and,It's okay to say boyfriend cause he is.” I say taking a brief moment to look about the Cafe. A mixture of couples sit around some straight couples though fewer than the same sex couples. This particular cafe being very friendly and open towards the LGBT community and with its close proximity to a few colleges and a university it's almost expected. “Vyrgil would like to have a hot cocoa and lots of those little marshmallows please. Also could you slide in a piece of your famous red velvet cake? We’re celebrating his birthday.

“Okay one matcha latte and one hot cocoa with marshmallows and a piece of red velvet cake coming up” she says with a big smile. “You can have a seat with your boyfriend and I'll bring these to you in a moment.” the snow white hare adds with just a big of a smile. I’m thinking she's happy for me that I've found someone who cares for me and someone I can share my time with.

I do as instructed, walking over carefully to sit with Vyrgil I sit down and give him a small smile. He’s still surveying the cafe. “This place is very, um...different” He says slowly and in a whisper as I sit down across the table from him. “Different in a good way, I mean there’s lots of couples like us here.” He continues when I don’t respond.

“Mhmm, good food, good furs around, well most of them are friendly some at times have their tails in a knot but everyone has those days. And of course excellent hot beverages….All you need is love and a good cup of coffee ” I say trying to get my lover to relax a little he seems a little tense, and the last part reading from the board behind him. He smiles and laughs looking at a picture on the far wall in front of him, which is behind me.

“That guy cannot be real.” He says in disbelief though his soft laughter a few do turn to look at us. He stops laughing I turn to look at the picture even though I already know he’s talking about the Fancy Fox mascot. It’s a picture of the owner a traditional red fox he’s wearing a monocle and a top hat like the old time fancy men, he’s wearing a suit and tie but the picture cuts off right around the top of his chest.

“He’s real I say with a smile, well the fox is. That’s the owner the outfit is just for show for the business. Everyone has the same reaction at first but, we all keep our muzzles shut around him about it. He doesn’t dress like that daily although he does dress nicely. Always in a nice suit when I see him. This cafe attracts a lot of customers. I imagine business is very good.”

Just as I finish talking he sits up straighter in his chair and I look to see Jenny, the same white snow hare from before with a tray in her paws. She sets the Matcha Latte in front of me the hot cocoa in front of Vyrgil. She then lights a candle that she had placed into the slice of cake before carefully placing it on the table just beside his drink. “Happy Birthday Vyrgil.” We say in unision. He smiles and I can see a small blush. Jenny quickly rushes back to the counter to attend to some waiting customers that had come in when she was delivering our items.

“Happy birthday hunny.” I say to him softly. He quickly blows out the candle and says “Thank you” He gets a piece of the red velvet cake on his fork and I take his other hand in mine.

“What did you wish for Vyrgil?”

“If I told you it wouldn’t come true.” He says flashing that soft smile that melts my heart in a nice way. I smile gently back at him, continuing to hold his hand.
