One of a few species of Neotomys we have around here, a juvenile wood rat which was barely distinguishable from a big deer mouse on first glance. They were quite young and small, which is obvious when I considered how silly an adult rat would be were they to chill out on my back porch eating stray cat food whilst a human stood a few feet away and took photographs... They did run off eventually, but only once they were done with their cat food piece, and no sooner.
