I lost my favorite hamster today. I know it's not good to have favorites, but sometimes you can't help but make a special connection. I run a rescue in Pittsburgh so we have many hamsters and I care for them all intensely, but Waffle and I had a special relationship. He was surrendered to us in June 2014 because he was "too aggressive" -- he was the sweetest and most gentle hamster I've ever met.
This is going to be a really difficult time for me. I've been giving him special care this past week after it became obvious he was going through kidney failure -- twice daily subcutaneous fluids, making sure he was comfortable. I was expecting this loss but that hasn't made it much easier for me. I'm going through a lot of emotions right now and I will probably need a few days to get back to normal. I apologize if I am absent or slow to respond to messages at this time.
Thanks for understanding. <3

I went through that when my rat Alice passed. She had a stroke and was recovering, I was hand feeding her pureed baby food and water through an oral syringe since she couldn't feed herself, and she was so trusting and snuggly. She was JUST recovering when she had another stroke, and that one took her. She was so sweet.
I absolutely feel this. ;;
Not only in the sense of losing a "favorite" at a multi-animal workplace (I, too, try not to have favorites... but it still always ends up happening, haha), but especially the understanding of losing an extra-special hamster!
I lost my best buddy Potato, a few years ago, and it was really difficult. I was fortunate in that I also was able to anticipate his passing, though, and we had a really touching few moments about a day or so before he passed, which really made coping & processing his death so much easier. I was very sad to lose such a great little guy, but also so thankful to have that closure & positive final memories of him. :')
I am so sorry for your loss, but I am also very happy that you were able to develop a relationship like this with such a special creature! Hamsters are terribly underrated, half the time, and are given such a bad rap as "mean/aggressive" animals, simply because people don't know how to properly care for them. It is comforting to see that love for these awesome animals still exists.
Best wishes to you as you recover from this loss, and I'm sure Waffle was an awesome little dude, and him & my bud Potato are surely stuffing all the veggies and seeds into their cheeks that they can, in the great beyond!
