I have the notion that each of Thunderhoof's anthro forms have mastery over a certain element.

The deer form takes on his namesake most of all (surprisingly, considering he's aligned with a horse god, after all) by channeling lightning through his spear. Also, he seems to be more adept at the weapon's usage in this form.
