It seems I've been infected by the latest meme to have gone viral on FA. According to Skidd's Old Art Meme:
"Post the oldest picture that you have drawn, that you can find on your computer or.. some old art cd or something."
My standard reply to the "how long have you been drawing" question is "ever since I could pick up a pencil," and I think I drew this comic just shortly after pencils were invented -- seriously, I almost had to carbon-date this drawing. So I present what is probably one of the oldest (if not THE oldest) surviving work of art still in my possession. I believe I drew this when I was in the 3rd Grade, which would date it circa 1968!
"Space Conquest" was a comic strip I drew to amuse myself back in those days. It featured the humorous mis-adventures of an American astronaut, Tom, and his Russian cosmonaut counterpart, Sid. Their stories took place in a post-Cold War future where the planet Earth had become part of the Union of the Planets. The Union often found itself at odds with the sinister Kingdom of the Planets, lead by the inhabitants of "Jupitor" (okay--so I wasn't the greatest speller back then). Tom and Sid were sometimes joined by another astronaut, Harry, and their trusty robot sidekick, Max.
In this story, "War of the Worlds," we find our heroes stationed at a base on the planet Electron (the mysterious -- and very chilly -- "Tenth Planet" of our solar system, and member of the Union of the Planets). Tom, Sid, Harry and Max come across an Electron spaceship undergoing repairs, so they decide to take go on board. Naturally, buttons are pressed and levers are pulled, and the next thing you know they're off to "Jupitor." And hilarious adventures ensue.
Hopefully the scan picked up most of the dialog. But if you have trouble reading any of it let me know and I'll post a transcription. Otherwise, enjoy this bit of prehistoric cartooning!

The 'Space Age' started in '57 when the Russkies launched 'Sputnik' - the first manmade satellite into orbit. That was during the height of the Cold War and the US was sure the next Commie satellite would be dropping A-bombs on our heads. JFK promised to land a man on the moon in '61 (to show the Russkies, so there, nyaaahh) and then the fun really began.
Then once we had 2-3 moon landings under our belt, no one gave a shit anymore; been there, done that...

Lol, and here's me chipping in!
Man did not land on the moon till 1969, thus fulfilling JFK's promise to get man on the moon before the end of the decade. Then after a few more years people DID lose interest and then NASA set to work on other things!
Maybe we'll get someone to Mars in our lifetime ^^

Science and space exploration were definitely major interests during my childhood. I recall one time, when I was still in kindergarten, I started crying because they took attendance during a NASA broadcast and I was afraid I would miss the launch of a Gemini mission. The caretakers reassured me that we could continue watching after everyone was accounted for.
Sadly, as Comus points out, people lost interest in space exploration very quickly after the first Lunar landing. I recall reading a commentary published 20 years ago, on the 20th anniversary of the landing, titled "Walk on the Moon, Shop at the Mall." That pretty much sums it up.

Thanks! Unfortunately, a lot of my ideas and characters were simply swiped from TV shows like Lost in Space and The Flintstones (there was a character in one of my old strips that was basically the Great Gazoo). This is probably the one page I am least embarrassed to show to others.
