The hum, ominous; the air, neutral.
The atmosphere of this steel ribcage;
fleshed with vinyl and composite plaster,
furnished with people young and old—
most old; their faces are tattooed with the shine
of rubber tubes; I do believe in death
despite what the recessed lighting would whisper,
despite what the light-hearted wall art would promise.
I do believe in death calling parallel to the orderly—
Truth is I’m sick of it, and sick with it.
Lurking here in this corner, worrying under the
shushing thumb of a well-lit plastic decorum.
Let him step out of the portal; let him be well.
Let the news be grim to his pride, but good.
