So here is the end of the weird idea, and some story to go with it
Warning this is kind of dark for what I have posted so far, as it is the fall and corruption of a 'hero - wannabe'. I blame this on being a DnD DM for the last 5 years and seeming to always find a way to torture my own NPCs, even on accident.
The unicorn knight Sir Leiran had finally found the lair of the beast who had been plaguing the forest. He would finally prove he was worthy to be a knight and not just a squire. With his trusty swords and armor he stepped confidently into the cave. No more than a few yard in and a large scaled creature lunged out of the dark at him, dodging this ambush and taking only a minor wound he readied himself for the battle. This creature, a large drake he now noticed, had to be what he was looking for, this fight would be over soon and he could finally get his shield of knighthood.
The battle raged on for many minutes, his skill in fencing allowing him to evade many of the feral creature's attacks and slowly bleed the lizard out. The creature finally slumped to the ground weary form combat and blood loss, the adrenaline lost. Leiran stepped over his foe and ended it's misery. Focused on cleaning his blade and contemplating how to best carve a trophy out of the drake to show his mentor, he never heard the other denizen of the cave, the true creature that he came to slay. That was until it gripped him by the back of his neck. Up he was lifted, until he looked into the serpentine visage of a massive black scaled dragon.
"Arrogant mule, you enter my cave, kill my pet and believe you can leave without repercussion? Your kind truly does believe itself invincible." The beast bellowed into Leiran's face. "The only fitting payment would be for you to take it's place", with that the dragon muttered under it's breath, reached out a clawed digit and poked the end of Leiran's horn. It then set the unicorn down upon the ground and backed away.
At first Leiran thought nothing had happened and that this dragon had gone senile over the long years of it's life, but then he felt a sharp pain in his hand. Looking down he watched as his fingernails thicken and grew into hard thick golden claws, in a sort of mockery of the hooves on his feet. He was shaken out of his stunned silence by an even worse pain in his mouth making him howl in pain. His flat herbivorous teeth fell out one by one, all being replaced by sharp fangs, and where his lower canines once sat were now tusks protruding from his mouth. The final pain that wracked his body was that of twin horns erupting from the back of his skull, this he did not notice, as his head had begun to feel cloudy.
The unicorn's main horn had begun to show spirals of dark magic wrapping around it and the horn itself began to twist backwards into an s-like shape. As this happened, Leiran found himself in another place, a dark room with a light only seeming to hang over him. He was then assaulted with visions of his mentor belittling him and looking down upon his skills, calling him a coward and weakling. All of the while this took place, his happy memories of his friends and noble family left him and replaced with life as an urchin, never feeling like he belonged. He had tried to become a knight to find a place for himself in the world, but he had failed, and run from the city in shame. He had no where to call home, and hid in the cave from the world outside. That was when he had met the dragon Ikarisil and had been offered a job and a friendship with the lonely reptile.
Leiran opened his eyes and stared into his master and friend's face, the only face he really trusted anymore. He knelt among the pieces of armor that had broken away from his changing body and waited for his next orders.
