I like a wacom tablet on photoshop for sketching, since erasing/ undoing is easier and quicker.
Though if I have enough time and energy, willow charcoal is great. I used to pre-draft my oil paintings with a charcoal drawing on the canvas before I apply paint, while referencing a previously drawn charcoal sketch/ study.
