Last night, I had what was probably the worst movie-going experience of my life.
My wife and I took my mother and father out to see the new Star Wars movie. (Don’t worry, there won’t be any spoilers in this.) I had seen it already – my parents had not. This is a small, local theater, and it was not very full – just a few smatterings of people here and there. We settled in, bought popcorn, and were getting ready to enjoy the movie.
And it started almost immediately. A group of teenagers to our left just would. Not. Stop. Talking. Just generally chattering on and being rambunctious throughout the entire movie. They also kept getting out of their seats and walking around. It only got worse as the movie went on, and towards the end they were actually shouting. They were definitely being too loud to ignore.
And then there was their mother. Or at least I think this woman was some kind of guardian to these teenagers: she was sitting a few rows in front of them with a few smaller kids. And she also talked throughout the whole movie. She wasn’t shouting: just explaining every single thing that happened in the movie to the kids next to her, in a clear, carrying, full-volume voice.
When the movie ended, my father, an older and fairly intimidating man, stood up and turned to the group of teenagers and started scolding them. He didn’t yell; he just kind of explained to them that they were in a public place and that they needed to be more mindful of others. Their rudeness had ruined the movie for everyone else.
And that woman, the one who had been talking throughout the movie, lost it. She began screaming and swearing at my father, throwing every profanity she could think of at him. My favorite part was that she actually said he should “just go see the movie again,” like the whole universe is supposed to cater to this woman’s rude kids.
Anyway, it was a frustrating experience, and we probably won’t be going to that theater again (the staff did nothing, after all.) To let off some steam, I decided to draw a short comic of how Rox would probably deal with the situation. The lines came out nice and I think it’s good enough to call it “finished,” but I’m not too pleased with some aspects of it (especially the faces) so I probably won’t be coloring this one.

The last time I went to the theater, among the previews, they had a prompt for everyone to turn their phones off or put them on vibrate, complete with a warning that, if a phone did go off, they would stop the film, ask the culprit to stand up, and pass out expired hard candies for them to throw at him/her.
Ten minutes into the film, somebody's phone went off, and damn near half the audience started chanting "Stop the film! Stop the film!"
It was a pretty lousy movie that I'd been dragged to (or at least lousy enough that I considered that the highlight of it), but it still pissed me off to think that somebody could be that insensitive and/or apathetic even when being mocked in advance for it.
Yeah, I totally would have been one of the ones cheering in that theater.

The way I see it, in being impolite to the disruptors, I'm being a godsend to the rest of the theatergoers.
And yeah. The fact that she was screaming obscenities at you all is just baffling, but I've seen other people do such things too. I think they know they're wrong, but they HATE being called on it.
