Cloudsdale! Socks thinks to himself while trotting through the privacy of the far edges of the Whitetail Woods- he had always been rather curious to visit that floating city, being a unicorn the Pegasi cities were rather hard to visit. Never āoff limitsā to ground dwellers, but mainly a case of the Pegasi applying a come on up if you can get here attitude; not really caring about accessibility for those not able to fly. But where there is a will thereās a way, and as in most solutions around Equestria, it involved a bit of magic.
He holds up a round potion bottle with a long thin neck, filled with grey liquid, swirling around the contents gently to make sure they were still mixed. Flight and cloud-walking rolled into one was the promise of this potion, according to the label, made to warp the inherent magic around the imbiber to allow those very abilities, at least for a short while. Wings of some sort is what he was expecting, probably not /Pegasus/ wings, but something or other. Heād found the potion on sale at an alchemistās shop over in Canterlot, they must have been closing down as the prices were more than reasonable⦠no way he could have afforded one full price!
Sitting back on his haunches he pops the cork from the bottle, tossing it to the ground. Now or never! He thinks to himself before turning back the bottle in his magic to chug down the potion. The stallion nearly gags on it, having a thick and gritty texture, almost like watery wet cement, and tasting quite similarly. It seemed to linger in his throat, flavour not wanting to leave, feeling cold as it slid down to his stomach, turning heavy and feeling almost as though he had swallowed a rock.
āUrgh⦠That⦠bleh.ā He shakes his head a nickers to himself, that alchemist needs to work on his potion flavours. One of the worst things heās ever consumed, by far!
The unicorn shivers in place, feeling an unfamiliar magic starting to flow around his being. His expression turns to excitement, looking toward the sky and waiting eagerly for the effects to take wing! Seconds pass, waiting, but the only thing he notices is the cold heaviness in his stomach seeming to get worse, spreading out and increasing in noticeable weight. The stallionās back and spine ache, becoming a little stiff as he wobbles on his hooves- a wave of dizziness overcoming him.
In a moment he loses balance, flopping over into a perfect face-plant upon the dusty path, WHAM! Out like a light.
Minutes go by, how many Socks has no clue as he blinks awake, bizarre tingling across his entire body. He looks up, attempting to lever himself up at least to his forehooves but finds himself combating a sinking feeling and lethargy in his limbs. It was if he were wading through molasses, his hooves were so slow to respond, ears met with a curious sound as they did⦠a gentle grinding, not unlike two mill-stones sliding together or a rock dragged over concrete. He shakes his head, the tingling turning to an intense pressure all around his chest and waist, squeezing like an over-tight corset around him.
āG-gah⦠wha? This isnāt⦠right.ā He gasps, muttering to himself as he surveys his body, eyes going wide at the sight. His entire midsection had lost its colour, taking instead a cool granite-like texture in place of his chocolate brown fur, glinting in the light. āNo⦠Nononoā¦ā He blinks, slowly recognizing the effect that was coming over him.
āHeee ā¦ā The stallion wheezes, trying to call out for help from any pony around, words cut short by the stone encasing his torso that he felt tingling and itching as it crept along, further. His forehooves turn more to lead in weight, squeezed as well by the compacting granite layer that appeared over his fur. With a strain and a wince he slides his left forehoof up, grinding along the way, before it stops, frozen as it raised, other hoof sinking into the dust slightly under the building weight of the petrifying pony.
He squirms in place, bucking his hind legs to try and scoot himself a little further toward the potion bottle that had rolled away when he dropped. Inch by inch, it become more difficult as he went as his haunches and hips ground to a halt, freezing in place much like his forelimbs had, the feeling of cold stone taking over them.
Socks stretches his neck as far as he can to look down at the bottle, the label having peeled up half-way⦠ā.. to stone.ā He saw etched into the glass beneath it. To stone⦠Flesh to stone! By Celestia what did he drink, that wasnāt a flight potion at all! As far the opposite as was likely possible in fact.
A wave of fear rolls over him as it sinks in just what was going to happen to him there⦠As the tingling marches down from the top of his head now, stone squeezing as might a cap several sizes too small, freezing his ears and mane in place his mind comes to. He was becoming a statue⦠and heād done it to himself. Out in the far reaches of the woods where nopony was likely to come across him for quite awhile.
He squirms with the last of the movement he can, hind hooves succumbing quickly and his eyes locking forward, dimmed only slightly in their vision as the stone seems to drip own over his countenance. In but a moment all that remained free from petrifying stone was his mouth, which very quickly fused shut beneath polished granite, cutting off a breathless and garbled mumble.
Around his rigid body he hears the crackling echoes of the stone as it settles, shrinking slightly as he become so much denser all around, the squeezing of the stone turning to a light muted numbness, though he could still feel the dirt beneath him in his haphazard sprawl. His thoughts remained unclouded, roiling around as he tried to come to grips with what had happened⦠what was to have been a day of glorious flight now turned upside down. Would⦠would it even wear off? Did this wear off!? He couldnāt remember!
The woods returned to silence, the pony that once stood there now a statue of utterly solid stone, set firmly in the landscape. Perhaps somepony would happen by and find him⦠only time would tell.

Yep, that's the good stuff. Really like when sound is a part of these transformations. I like to think that his last cry for help had a similar sound of grinding stone or rumbling as his chest hardened up. And the shiny stone is so nice again!
I do have one question: When it comes to the eyes and manes of the subjects, they usually keep some tone and detail in your art. Is this something you prefer? Completely blank eyes is something I most commonly see.

Sounds is an under used aspect, it's true! I myself was guilty of neglecting it in my writing before Dombrus inspired me to write it in as a better element with the works he wrote. ^^
Where it comes to the details on a statue, I do generally prefer to have a bit more detail than some others do, particularly in the mane and the eyes. The colour is usually slightly different for the mane just because it adds a little extra contrast and depth to the image, which I feel is necessary given how cartoony and flat my/the show style can wind up looking without that. If I drew in a different medium, I'd likely do them the same colour as the body.
As for the pupils though, that's a little more unique! The eyes without pupils on statues actually comes exclusively from the classical age, particularly with Greece and Rome. They intentionally left the pupils off of the eyes (which they were certainly more than capable of carving) because the culture of the time generally enjoyed having their statues, and indeed temples and buildings painted over in full vibrant colours. ( Some examples here~ http://www.colourlovers.com/blog/20.....cal-antiquity/ ) It's almost shocking to see those like that, the Parthenon and its famous marbles would have been in bright yellows and reds, the Discobolus of Myron would have been flesh toned, and the Nike of Samothrace would have worn brightly coloured clothes. Modern sensibilities detest the destruction of natural tone in 3D mediums, particularly in expensive marble, woods, and other things, but if you were to take anyone from classical Greece to the Louvre today- they'd wonder why we had all these "unfinished statues" on display. Just goes to show how much culture can change in over two thousand years. XD
Modern statues that were never intended to be painted tend to have pupils carved into their eyes, which is where I go with most of my petrifications, as I like to insert them into the culture of their time as a work of art. However, if I were to draw a statue that had been petrified for mellennia then I would go with one without pupils, as they'd have likely turned into a painted statue way back when and the painted had simply been weathered away.
Consequently, that'd be a good indicator for how long the statues in the Royal Canterlot Garden have been around, as they don't have pupils, while other statues around in more modern places, like the fountain in Ponyville do~! ( Example: https://gyazo.com/d4055c3c245759884bc1fa563d1470b1 ) It implies Canterlot is both an ancient city that would have looked VERY different a long time ago, and that if they were once ponies... they've certainly been there a looooooong time. You can also see the vast difference in weathering on those statues too.

Interesting. It does make sense as to the different styles, I wonder if the MLP staff went through this as they were creating the world, from an art perscpective in the very least. If this concept applies, it is still open for debate, as these are style differences. If anything the differences between the Canterlot and Ponyville statues are merely time related. However, most petrified ponies we know for a fact were pony at one point, have the characteristics of not being painted/designed to not be painted. Even Discord from 2000 years ago had his pupils and eyes as if they were carved stone to look that way. Possibly this is a fact, that petrified creatures have their eyes and possibly other features intact, rendering them a 'realistic' statue as they are turned to stone. The 'featureless' statues may be infact, just statues.
I would think that a statue's size would be a determining factor as whether or not it once was a pony. While pony sizes can fluctuate over time, a pony that large, to me, would seem to be an actual carved statue. The only examples we have of petrification are from: Stare Master, where Flutters and Twilight become 'statues', and for the most part, thye seem to maintain their normal size. And episodes in reference to Discord where it is his history and his first appearance. Both in the past, 2,000 years ago when Luna and Celestia 'captured' him and currently when he gets re-petrified from the Taste the Rainbow beam. Both of these examples seem to indicate that a petrified being stays close to their origional size.
The link above with the two statues, the ponyville statue looks as if it was carved out of stone, being 3 to 4 times larger than a pony itself. The Canterlot gardens, after I looked up pictures, seem to be the same. Several times larger than a pony themselves, dwarfing the princesses as well. I did a quick "Thumb" fit with the statues, and it is possible to have a petrified pony inside, with a larger statue cast around them, but just barely. However, it is a stone cover over an already petrified pony, seems kinda overkill to me, at least unnecessary. It also ruins the question if the statue was a real pony at one point. XD
However, a search for MLP statues reveals a few things. The first thing is that there are maybe a hoofull of statues in the show all together, I would state that is a sub-par information pool for a determining factor about statues in Equestria. We'd have to see alot more before anything can be set in stone for them. However, I did find this: https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://mlpforums.com/uploads/post_images/img-52500-1-7kwGV.jpg&imgrefurl=https://mlpforums.com/topic/2023-dont-blink/&h=539&w=585&tbnid=CZJGptwfXtbM_M:&docid=R_G_jwgRXH-tEM&ei=aCyPVpzIHMzmmAGT5p24Cg&tbm=isch&ved=0ahUKEwicnPS6opnKAhVMMyYKHRNzB6cQMwgvKBIwEg That is perfectly (And suspiciously) the right size to have been a pony at one point, making the possibility that there ARE ponies out there in public that are statues. The lost/unexplored areas of Equestria are another thing, that lends itself to a higher possibility of statue ponies.
Another point in pony statues. Discord was in the Canterlot garden, petrified and in plain open view. It would seem that the Ponyville class and even Cherilee wasn't aware that he was inside/petrified, their view was that Discord was simply a statue of his likeness. It also leads to another intersting fact. That Celestia had, at the very least, 1 petrified sentient being in her garden at some point, Discord. Only two ponies ever knew about it, the princesses. If they were so willing to display a vanquished enemy in public, who knows if they have other ponies or threats tucked away somewhere in statue form. They were willing to do so for one, means we have to question their reason why.
All in all, the possibility of ponies being thought as merely statues can happen. Though their 'term' as a statue is divined by the location they were petrified. A pony in the middle of the street would be easily identified as one. A pony being in a somewhat wrong place or the wrong time can lead to a very long period of time where they are a statue. You'd think there would be a group or task force that would check the statues that randomly turn up in a magical world where petrification is a possibility. But then that would take away all the fun :P
