Alright explaining time. So over the past several days I'd been thinking of a concept for a semi-sentient gelatinous cube (and who doesn't love those things? :P) and was trying to figure a way to make that so... Along the way I imagined maybe this particular ooze had a symbiotic relationship with another creature with a more capable intelligence, and I began working with that.
After some thinking I ended up with this: a dragon of unknown species had been eaten by the cube, then somewhere along the lines had magically linked itself with the cube. Exactly how they ended up linked is still something I'm working on, but the working idea is that the dragon realized it had less than stellar odds of escaping and so bonded its mind and spirit with the ooze to live on that way.
The two communicate telepathically and often bicker with each other over things; the most common being where to go - as the dragon has very little influence in that. The cube never fully engulfed the dragon way back in their first encounter, and after some time digesting the second half kinda uh.... Got left behind. So the only real way the dragon can get around now is with the cube's help in most cases.
There's more I want to do with this character (Two characters? Character and a half? XD), but that will have to wait a while. For now, here's this concept sketch x) It was pretty hard putting all this info to paper/text, since most of it is kinda vague as it is in my mind xD But they'll be developed further from here~
I haven't thought of any real personality for the duo, other than the dragon's kinda mellowed out over the century or two of being bonded with the ooze (Being a bit of a typical "evil dragon" prior to that. Now he's just kinda nuts :P)
The dragon's species will forever remain a mystery in his/their canon - though I've decided he'd be a red-copper hybrid in my mind. As he puts it - "That's for me to know and you to never find out~"

I would imagine that the slime would have developed the sentience/sapience as a result of the same magic the dragon used to survive, possibly as a mistake made from the severity of the situation. Otherwise, I'd imagine that the magic used would have probably given the dragon full control. Slime isn't exactly intelligent on its own.
I could easily see and agree with a dragon in that state mellowing out with little control over his or her location or movement, with the slime being more content to loiter and ooze over to things to eat. Even with sapience, it would be hard pressed for a slime to really overcome its natural tendencies. We ourselves have our own vices that take hold because of a primal root, so it might even have periods of overindulgence and becoming quite aggressively voracious. I still can't imagine the slime to be that intelligent, but being linked with the dragon, is at least capable of holding a conversation and an occasional witty rebuttal. Honestly I could see the slime as one of those stupid people who thinks they're smart and uses big words inappropriately, at least after it became used to being sapient. Depending on how long they've been together though, the slime may have developed a point of proximity intelligence that would at least keep it from being too stupid.
Those are my thoughts, I can't very well speak for the dragon much here because that would be less circumstantially explained. In no way am I trying to dictate what should or shouldn't be, but that's based on my understanding of slimes and such.

If the dragon really needs the full freedom of movement he'll just leap out. He can make better use of his magics that way, can decide where he wants to go, and is a bit faster (He can create an artificial second half for himself in certain situations too, but it's just temporary). The most control he has over the cube is using his magic to create a pressurized jet of the cube's own acid at attackers, but only while he's inside it.
The way I like thinking of it is that being bonded to a Mindless creature for so long had something to do with his mellowing out hehe. Going from 'Kinda evil' to 'kinda childlike and a bit nuts' during all that time xP
Cube's definitely got a bit of snarkiness to it at times, like accusing the dragon of having a poor Perception stat since he literally walked right into it back on their initial encounter xP

Actually, I have an idea for the link. Make the dragon a very inexperienced Lich. Their final test of their skills is their death and revival. What if during his revival stage, he didn't secure his tomb correctly and woke up with his body in the cube. In a panic, he could have unleashed dark magic tethering his essence partially to it, and since most cubes are considered soulless. His personality (the emotional part that Liche's seem to destroy) could imprint it's self on the cube?
It's a a thought anyways

Always a possibility..... I was thinking about what parts I wanted to leave vague and/or unknown, and while I did settle on a species for him (Red-Copper hybrid... Not that anyone in his canon would know that ;3) I'm wondering if their circumstances of meeting would be vague too or not. When they "met" he was wandering through the tomb/dungeon/whatever and literally just walked right into the cube without realizing it (Perception wasn't his best stat :P), but what he was doing there in the first place is anyone's guess. I like your ideas though, but will need some more thinking... Will probably take some inspiration from it though x)
Especially with the emotions part - since most of my ideas I had for drawings involving this duo showed the dragon as being a bit of a goof and the cube (When they're 'talking' with each other) a little less so; perhaps the cube inherited some of the dragon's seriousness and the dragon's seriousness kinda mellowed out from the bonding to a mindless slime xP

Thanks x3 Certainly is a touch different :> At least for me anyway~
I haven't really been able to DnD any since I was a kid. The fact it often relies so heavily on other people being there with you and not being a solo thing (the cRPG's being an exception) doesn't help any ^^;

Glad you like <3
Hehe yeah since the gel has its own free will the dragon's gotta convince it that his intended destination is more important / a better idea than the cube's intended destination, which is generally in the direction of something the cube deems edible, and very likely isn't where the dragon wants to go.
Mmm what question was it again? I forget ovo;

Interesting concept, I see here, although I assumed at the first glance, that the dragon got stuck in ice and his bony remains got preserved in his rather cold grave. But then, there would have been flesh on the bones as you can observe in preserved mammoths, that where found in permafrost.
One might think, it's a dead thing, but surprisingly its not, because the mind of the dragon still exists.

Spooky.
If you need inspiration for a sassy cube... Rusty and Co has just about the sassiest and most radical:

Yeah I found that while I was prodding around looking for images of the blobby things. Pretty funny stuff there ^^
(Though in theirs while the Cube certainly seems sentient enough, s/he/it doesn't actually talk - whereas mine does. Albeit with assistance from the dragon's magic, but still.)

Fun concept, and I like how it is drawn, jelly cube is jelly :) I don't know much about D&D, but read a few materials, even campaign journals, these things seem to be able to deliver a few good laughs if exploited well by the DM. Not much remained from that dragon, though! (Maybe he was really already a lich, so there wasn't too much "fluff" on him for the start :D )
I don't know far too much either - I know some creatures and a few places, but my friends are the ones that know a lot about it and play often hehe x)
Mm I think the main problem is that I just drew it poorly xD The general idea is there, just needs to be improved on :>
I'm not 100% on what his life was like when he was still flesh-n-blood, but he was already experimenting with 'dark' magics at the time, which is why he was able to pull this off to begin with (Plus, black dragons in DnD already look kind of bony and such to begin with xD)
Could very well be though, one never knows! One of the things I wanted for him is that his past was a bit ambiguous - so that may very well have been the case :D
