ahhhh the good old halo series. I caught myself very attached to them since the first halo, due all the coop and matchmaking fest around my friends. While halo shined on the multiplayer department for many, i enjoyed a lot the storyline; specially on coop, cause playing it with a friend in legendary difficulty was quite a superb experience.
Halo 1, 2 and 3 focused around the master chief journey; while the campaigns were really great, the character development around John 117 wasnt really deep. The only way you could understand behind master chiefs background story was through some books.
Putting master chief story away, i played this "expansion" or "side story" game called HALO 3: OSDT. The story centered around a team of ODST (orbital drop shock troopers) , stranded on a desolate New Mombasa city. Being the rookie of the team, the objetives were to locate your squadmates and together get rid of the last units of covenant around the city. Some might consider this game as the black sheep from the lot, but myself if was pretty much a hidden gem.
The pace was really different from a halo; instead of run-shoot-hide-recover-run-shoot it focused more on exploring a desolate city (like a big HUB), gather information, understanding hidden messages, and a background story from the city habitants and your own squadmates. I would be explaining a lot here, but what i really loved about this game was the investigation and the superb soundtrack, which truly shines mixing futuristic and jazzy tunes. Perfect to listen under the rain.
Regarding halo, my favorite still Halo Reach but ODST stays as a memorable hidden gem. A truly great experiment from Bungie.
This comission done by Otherwords shows a tired Blur ODST member, enjoying a short rest while the rain soaked the whole armor, equipment and soul of the weary soldier. Move on! cause enemy patrols are on the lookout.
