To paraphrase an entry from Urban Dictionary:
"Dude, that's so Meta! - A film about making a film about the film industry!"
Or, to be more exact: "Meta" carrying some essence of its true meaning, but also being used as an opposite of the Droste Effect, i.e. a picture appearing within itself in an endlessly recursive manner, such as could be seen on the labels of a Dubonnet bottles in the 1970s and 1980s, or perhaps as the opposite of Chinese Boxes or Russian Nesting Dolls.
Indeed, the prefix 'Meta' is an interesting beast, as it is often associated with 'Ortho' and 'Para', such as in Chemistry, where the prefixes are used to describe the poisition of functional groups on a cyclic molecule, such as Benzene.
Or, in language and Philosophy there are Orthodoxies, Heterodox opinions, Paradoxes, and there is also a drug called Metadox, which is used to treat ADHD, and severe alcohol intoxication.
In psychology, there is Orthonoia, which is the standard mode of thinking; Paranoia, where folks might think everyone is out to get them, and Metanoia, which signifies a psychological breakdown of the self, followed by a fundamental healing and rebuilding that represents a permanent shift in the ways of thinking.
Then there is also the genre of 'Meta-Fiction', which is similar to the proverbial 'Breaking the Fourth Wall' in theatre.
This piece also had a number of odd inspirations, starting with a bumper sticker that I saw one day, that actually broke the fourth wall.
Other references are quite obvious, such as Don Henley's song: "The Boys of Summer" and John Prine's song: "Flag Decal".
