Illustration for "Rock and Yule," my second Fraggle Rock story. It does not entirely conform to the scene in the text, as I began the illustrastion some time before I began to write the story. Gobo, of course, should not be so non-chalant about discovering all his friends back at the Great Hall frozen. And, had I designed this for the story, I would probably have included Wembley, Mokey, Red or Boober as well. Another anachronism in the illo is that Gobo appears not to have met Darl before ... whereas in the story he's known Darl for about a year.

Don't forget to read the story I wrote from a different point of view, then!

Lovely pose to go out on for sure! I did make sure to read the related story as well, which provided quite a bit of interesting context to the pic, even if the exact events depicted didn't quite make it into the final story. Almost a shame they ended up thawing out, they look absolutely cute locked in that pose!
The Bells of Fraggle Rock, was one of my favorites, touching on the idea of faith but not in an in-your-face sort of way.
It was kinda interesting that Fraggles can be frozen solid and revived without any lasting effects. One thing I did wonder was if the 'outer space' part of the world noticed the phenomena in any manner.
Love how well you work with the Fraggle style. Fun, whimsical and there's just something 'right' about your interpretation of their look.
If I ever get the opportunity I would love to commission you.

Some insects seem able to freeze and rethaw ... and bacteria, of course. The trick seems to involve the removal of sugars from the cell body, which seems to prevent the cell from desiccating. I doubt it's a metabolic feat that higher animals can perform. How Fraggles do it, I have no clue.
Using the best evidence given us by the TV episodes, Silly Creatures seem able to see Uncle Matt while he's travelling, but Doc does not see Gobo. The only sensible explanation I can think of is that people see Matt because they expect to see him -- he just looks like a funny old man in a pith helmet. But Doc doesn't expect small people to live behind the wall of his workshop, and so doesn't see them even when they're there. My guess is that Fraggles do sometimes explore Outer Space, but unless they dress to resemble Silly Creatures (as Matt seems to have inadvertently done), Humans won't see them.

I always thought that it was just Doc was easily distracted by other things, but what I was referring to was the idea that 'The Rock' was supposed to slow down and stop if the Fraggles' bells were not rung resulting in everything freezing. I was just curious if that meant that the Silly Creatures' world lost a few seconds off their clocks or something tangible.
But thanks for taking the time to reply.
