Littoral Combat Ship. A type of frigate-sized, very fast warships (top speed 40 knots), intended for operations in the littoral zone (i.e. waters near a hostile coast). The intention is that the vessels can be re-roled between different types of mission by exchanging mission modules. The one in the picture is of the LCS-1 type (Freedom class), with a more conventional monohull; there is also the LCS-2 type (Independence class) which has a trimaran hull.
