This was Issa's first Pokemon. She would always help out Professor Oak and when she turned 10, he gave her the Growlithe as a birthday present. The two instantly fell in love and he has been with Issa ever since. He's gone through the Kanto Region with her, helping her win the Championship through the Elite Four. He followed her all the way to the Johoto Region and backed off a little when she got the starter Pokemon there, but he always stepped in when he was needed most to get out of a bad situation. He would be considered the leader or 'king' of all of her Pokemon and the most respected. He is sometimes called "King" by Issa as a nickname. He is father to many Arcanine, especially Issa's Arcanine: Gin, Kurama, and Phoenix.

Arcanine's father was a Battle Bred Arcanine while his mother was a Standard Show Arcanine. His fur is lighter than normal because of the fur color that his mother had, making people sometimes believe that he is a Shiny. Though he is father to a Shiny, he himself is not a Shiny.
