Myth and legend often like to glamorize many aspects of a gods' lives. They're so powerful, so wise, so beautiful, so perfect. None of these aspects, however, are so put upon as high a pedestal as their romance. Obviously, gods must be irresistible, unerringly smooth, downright masters of the heart (and the bedroom).
Yeah... Paldan would easily have a few words to say about a few of those.
Don't misunderstand, upon first meeting Lillias, mere months after his deification, he already felt a sort of spark between the two of them. She lived out of a small shop upon wheels at the time, just a young, marshmallow-skinned merchant woman making her way through the world. At the time, he and the rest of the pantheon were on a mission to save the world... but there was something about her, something that just made him ask, "would you like to travel with us?" Miraculously, or at least to him, she said yes.
It didn't take long to find out Lillias was FAR more than met the eye. Apparently, she was the escaped princess of one of the larger kingdoms on the continent, the rest of her family (save her brother) having been put to the flames in a violent coup d'etat. She was quiet and carried herself with a sort of princess-like air, but still never seemed to look down on anyone either, which Paldan couldn't help but admire.
Naturally, as the journey stretched on, he made many an attempt to woo her. However, the awkward, easy-to-panic nature of the young god made each mole-hill screw up into a Everest-sized problem and her often silent disapproval only seemed to affirm his fears. To make matters worse, his fellow gods were too eager to help; oftentimes ending up admonishing him for screwing up their advice and further tanking his self-confidence. Their relationship remained at arms length, even after they tentatively began to sleep with one another; both afraid that they were the reason why things weren't working. After several over-corrections on either side - Paldan attempting more outlandish expressions of affection and Lillias shutting off more of her distracting emotions - the god of Form finally nailed the coffin and broke things off. In a huff of silent anger, Lillias left and Paldan wouldn't see her again... for a good 80 years.
When the two did meet back up, they both had changed. Paldan, who had before seemed childlike and thin in his default form, had grown taller, slightly thicker and had a stronger jawline, making him seem much more godlike. This, however, was also in tandem with his personality, now being more patient, slower to panic or to anger, and more willing to go out on a limb and get the full story rather than jump to conclusions. Lillias, on the other hand, had since taken command of a heavily militarized city (both in terms of might and economy); becoming a trusted, admired, and feared ruler of a merfolk race. This position had the effect of making her colder, harsher, more abrasive. She hated showing weakness and would think nothing of quelling any question regarding her "soft appearance" or her ability to lead. Their re-acquaintance was... rocky, to say the least. Lillias was unwilling to give Paldan another chance so soon and, honestly, he wasn't about to blame her for it. The pantheon was again called to help save the world, so both of them had bigger issues to worry about anyway. That didn't stop him from thinking about her, though.
It wouldn't be until the end of this newer threat to the world that the two met up again. Paldan threw everything he had into the dates they went on, thankfully no longer sweating as much when things would go awry. Slowly, but surely, Lillias opened back up to him, softening back toward the girl he had remembered long ago. She never went completely back to normal, and would even snap back to full ice-queen while in uniform, but he was happy that she at least seemed to reciprocate his feelings for her once more.
A couple years after their second round of dating, Paldan surprised Lillias with what he felt was the appropriate home for the two of them: a gigantic floating island in the sky. Upon this island, he had built a castle-like mansion to appeal to her memories of royal youth and said that this place would be where they would raise their children... right before he presented her with a platinum engagement ring, the stone made from the very center of his emerald core. The two became man and wife a few months later. Months after that, Lillias gave birth to a small opal gemstone; their first daughter, Auralise.
Even with Aura born, Lillias still remained partially hardened and, as a result, Aura imprinted more on her father. Paldan had hoped the girl would have brought more of the old Lillias back, but sadly it seemed more and more that there wasn't any hope for this. While Aura was away at boarding school, which Lillias had recommended due to her own city's less than stellar environment for the young nexian girl, the two would occasionally argue. Paldan would sling remarks about her "cheating on him with her city" and she would often fire back with memories of how he dumped her when the chips were down. They still cared for one another and divorce could not be further from either's minds, but it was reaching a point where Paldan almost wished the damned merfolk city would just sink so he could have his wife and Aura her mother back. He never would have guessed how that wish would have eventually been granted.
After Aura had reached maturity, and had even risen to godhood and gotten married herself, there came talk of some kind of cult rising in cities around the world. This cult shunned the old pantheon in favor of some new "elder god" figure, though no one had seen or heard of such an individual prior. Slowly but surely, seeds of fanatascism and widespread bigotry began to plague the cities of the world; sadly, Lillias' city was no different. Within only a short couple of years, there came calls for an overthrow of the government. Paldan, while still not a tremendous fan of the city itself, decided to assist in resisting the cult's spread. After all, Lillias cared for the place, she had built a lot of what made it what it was, and he cared more about her than he hated it for taking what he saw as the "real her" from him. In the end, however, even his support was not enough. The city fell to the cult's rule. As the two escaped via airship, Paldan was more than prepared to smite the capitol building and the new government within for doing this to his wife, but Lillias held him back. She had seen enough to know it would do no good and she didn't want the populous to hate the gods, and her husband, more than they already did.
As the years continued, the cult spread and, following a cataclysmic event that stripped the pantheon of much of their power, each of the gods were either defeated or forced into hiding. Paldan gathered what members of his race hadn't fallen under the cult's spell and brought them to a small city, which he named Lattis, located in the mountains. His island had fallen sometime during the overthrow of the gods, and Lillias had been injured in the process, turning her mute. It took all of the combined research he could gather regarding nexian core-based technology and medicine, but at long last, using the very engagement ring he had given her, he made a telepathic link to his wife, allowing her voice to once again return to his world. With their means of communication restored, Paldan set about making sure he, Lillias, Aura, and the rest of the nexians he protected would be hidden and safe. All the while, Lillias helped in all ways that she could, whether it be advising on how to lead or just simple back-of-the-mind encouragement. This strengthened their bond to a far greater degree than it had been before and, despite the loss of their near celebrity status as a god couple within the world, Paldan and Lillias had never been more happy to be with one another.
Okay... an entire 4-seasons worth of tabletop RPG timeline later:
TLDR:
Allow me to introduce Paldan's wife and Aura's mother, Lillias.
She is a marshmallow slime being and an ex-princess... and ex-commander-in-chief of two different cities. XD
Her personality is quiet (as of the working timeline, she is actually currently mute), but she is also strong, intelligent, and kind.
Both she and Paldan have been through A LOT together, and I dedicate both the image and the blurb above to my close friend and GM who helped make her story (and that of Paldan's) possible. Said friend is here on FA somewhere, but I don't actually know her username... but that's cool since we still keep in touch via Steam and I've already shown her the image via Dropbox, so no sweat! ^^
HUGE thanks to
for once again bringing one of my most beloved characters to life (THIS IS THE FIRST IMAGE I HAVE EVER HAD COMMISSIONED OF LILLIAS UP TO THIS POINT ^^)!
Lillias © me and my anonymous friend. ;)
