Sorry that I missed the Q&A, but I finally got my lazy butt around to watching the video. Just wanted to say thanks for posting it. A good watch, and while I still think I'm far more firmly in the "Start" camp than you where fanart is considered, this definitely gave me some good food for thought.
I think it's interesting some of the parallels between fanart and commission work in general -- the idea of giving up creativity/originality for the sake of what is essentially someone else's idea, and how you as an artist grow from each type of work, or don't, as the case may be (if expression and growth as an artist/person are paramount, do you think commissions have the same fundamental flaws that you talked about in the Q&A as fanart?) I think it would have been interesting to take a walk down that path comparing the two a bit more, although I guess it was kind of outside the scope of this particular session.
Thanks again for recording the chat. An hour well spent. :) Here's hoping that 2016 is off to a good start for you.

Thanks for watching! Glad it was good to you.
I'd say a fanart commission applies in about the same way as creating fanart for oneself. A commission series exploring RedXIII exploring different areas (for example) can be filled with substance, but ultimately fulfills a different goal than a series around an original character concept that is closely related to the character. I don't think that makes one better than the other, necessarily. But I can say my priorities in my life not only push me away from creating fanart on the reg but also encouraging others to commission me for non-fanart.
(Of course, if the fanart commission concept is sexy-enough to me, all bets are off and I'll just take the job anyway, but that hasn't happened before.)
