Sakaika: Yo, Wolfbird-- is it true your head is made out of beer bottle boxes?
Icewolf: *cries in the corner* I hate you!
Sakaika: Loser.
This is my first head next to my newest one, both built by myself. I'd like to think I have improved since.
The husky (Wolfbird) really is made out of beer bottle boxes (and I think there are some pizza pocket box bits in there somewhere, too) and was made about 5 years ago. It's heavy, hot, looks like ass, fits badly and is just all-around craptacular. I only keep it because Koztah likes it, for some reason (ironic, seeing as how he hates all things furry).
Sakaika (the dragon, tentatively named) is my proudest piece of art to date, srsly. My bad on the bad picture quality, but its the best I can do for now. I'm currently working on a compilation for various angles of her, check back soon.
** FYI, I am aware that her beak looks funny. The orange and pink parts will be covered soon. The fabric around the beak has been pulled back with pins and masking tape on purpose, it'll be pulled back when the beak's done. The spots and S-curve under the eye have not been sewn on yet, hence the pins in them. I'm waiting for
Apollo's go-ahead for them. That random red bit below Sakaika's chin is part of the horn from my other dragon suit, seen earlier in my gallery.

ooh, thanks!
Eventually, I'll branch out to other critters. A friend of mine has been pining away for a tigerwolf ( http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1760109/ ) so maybe I'll make that one next. I just live close to a $2/meter fabric store which doesn't stock fur, so I'm making non-furry animals until I trust myself enough to buy $20/meter fabric :3

wow! that's really nice. I like how it's coming along. I'm curious what fabric you used, is it cotton, or what? Maybe it's the pic quality but it looks very soft. It might be really good for some sleek furry heads (horses, jackals, deer, or any other furry that might have really smooth head fur). If you need small amounts of furs for anything, there's always Michael's, they sell 20cmx25cm (roughly) chunks of it usually in the same aisle as the felt, comes in black, white, tan, and leopard spots (not much to start, but something is something right?)
The other thing you can do (before buying fur fabric yourself) is use things like suedecloth, or velour or something else that imitates skin/very short fur. And also you can have people who have fur at home already laying around (like myself) who want a head ship you the fur and then you make the head. Make sure if you do that though, to have them ship more than you need (most heads don't need more than a meter because it's so wide (like 112cm or so) but a meter and a half can cover for mistakes.
Good luck with all this, I'd love to see more. How much would you be charging for a head if you made one for someone?

The black fabric on Sakaika's face is polar fleece, or something very much like it. Really soft, stretchy in all directions (a must IMO, unless you're unto baggy bodysuits). The horns and face details are gray felt (I've heard terrible things about felt, that it breaks down with time, but the stuff I got seems solid enough for that. Let me put this suit through hell and I'll get back to you on durability). Her fins are a sort of very short pile microfibre.. don't know what it's called but it's also $2/meter.
I don't think we have Michael's in Quebec. We've got Fabricville, which must be similar. That bargain fabric place has different sorts of that microfibre stuff (plus suede and velour) , but often the picking are slim for colors. I think I'll buy some more of it, assuming Steele's colors are available when I'm ready to start her suit (also assuming she's OK with really short pile as well).
I've thought about getting into making suits for profit for a while now, but you caught me on the spot XD I think I'd start by seeing how well I can make a suit for someone whom I've never met in person before (Steele'd be good for that, lol). My biggest fear for going commercial is having someone rip me a new one for making something that just doesn't fit them or is impractical to wear for one reason or another. Assuming I can pull it off, I think a price quote would rely on how simple/complex it is and what materials are used. Something like maybe $200 for labor on something non-complex, plus cost of materials I use? *scratches head* If you're asking for yourself and have the required fur already lying around, I'm open to the idea of taking a stab at it.

I'm definitely interested, I've got a head for my main started, but I'd love to see your take on a horse some time, and I do have some (or should) fur the right color for his face around. I'll double check and get back to you in a note so that we can work out details, if that's cool ^_^
here's a ref. His name is Gus, he's a zombie horse. I'm perfectly willing to supply hair for him if we go that far, (although it might be easier for me to make a sort of a wig for him rather than trying to hair the actual head), while I can't get yellow to orange hair, it's not a necessity for a costume head and I have a few good places I can get bright orange hair from.

Looks doable, and very cute :3. The hair would give me a headache, the wig might be easier. I'm telling you right now that I don't know squat about hair styling, so you're on your own for the curling, but I have a pretty good idea of how I'd go about the rest of the head.
If you wanna chat more, we can move this to FA notes-- gimme an idea of what sort of head you're looking for an we can get some brainstorming done. Alternatively, I also have MSN and am usually signed in (contact info on my gallery homepage).
Hope to talk to you soon! :3
